Rosaline was Romeo’s girlfriend who left him to become a nun. Shakespeare writes, “...What sadness lengthens Romeo’s hours? Not having that which, having, makes them short. In love? Out. Of love? Out of her favor, where I am in love.”(1.1.156-161) In this quote,
Benvolio is questioning Romeo about why he is sad and Romeo tells him that Rosaline left him to become a nun. If Rosaline had not become a nun, she would have still been with Romeo and he would have never met Juliet. If Romeo had never met Juliet, he wouldn’t have died.
Benvolio is also to blame in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Benvolio was Romeo’s cousin and friend. The text states, “At this same ancient feast of Capulet’s Sups the fair Rosaline whom thou so loves With all the admired beauties of Verona.” (1.2.84-86) In this scene, Benvolio is convincing Romeo to go to the Capulet party to go and see Rosaline and all the other Beautiful women in Verona. If Benvolio had not convinced him to go then Romeo would not have met Juliet.
One of the last few people to blame in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet is Tybalt. Tybalt was mad when Romeo came to the party so he challenged him. Romeo did not want to fight, but when Tybalt killed Mercutio, Romeo killed him. The writing states, “ Romeo slew him...And for that offence Immediately we do exile him hence” (3.1.178,183-184) In this scene, the Prince is addressing what has just happened and banishes Romeo from Verona. If Tybalt didn’t challenge Romeo, then Romeo wouldn’t have been banished and he would still be alive.
Rosaline, Benvolio, and Tybalt all had a hand in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Rosaline left Romeo which caused him to be upset and out of love. Benvolio convinced Romeo to go to the Capulet party where he met Juliet. Tybalt challenged Romeo which ended in Romeo’s banishment. Romeo listened to all these people and sometimes, listening to others can make you do crazy things.
