When Friar Lawrence gives Juliet the sleeping potion as a solution to her shameful second marriage, he tells her, “And this shall free thee from this present shame, if no inconstant toy nor womanish fear abate thy valor in the acting of it” (4.1.120-122). The feud between both families had secrecy be obliged in the marriage with Romeo. If it had not been secret, there would be an honest truth to Juliet’s refusal to Paris’ request for marriage, and Romeo would not have been given the fate of death in his youth. Right before the watch comes to investigate the tomb, Juliet exclaims, “O, happy dagger. This [Juliet’s heart] is thy sheath. There rust and let me die” (5.3.175). The feud between the Montagues and the Capulets morally guided Juliet to kill herself instead of facing the wrath of her parents and possibly the Montagues as well. Overall, Shakespeare illuminates idea that conflicts between two parties influencing certain decisions involved in such frivolous oppositions. From the beginning of Romeo and Juliet, to the end of the tragic play, the lovers’ sorrowful end was due to the feuding of the house of Montagues and the Capulets.
