Choosing Ruthenium As My Element
Ruthenium often called its symbol, Ru, which atomic number is 44 and the atomic mass is 101.07 u ± 0.02 u. This element is known to have 27 radioactive isotopes but 7 regular isotopes. Ruthenium is solid at room temperature and looks like a hard, silvery-white metal with a shiny surface ( See page 2 for picture. ).The 3 main types of subatomic particles are protons, neutrons, and electrons. To humans Ruthenium is highly toxic and carcinogenic, and shouldn’t be touched if came into contact with. Five fun facts about is one, Ruthenium was founded in 1844 by Karl Ernst Claus. Also, the metal is used as a hardener for palladium and platinum and Ruthenium is a member of the platinum group. And when pure Ruthenium alone can cost $1400 per 100g. Ruthenium is considered a rare metal and is very hard to find. …show more content…
I honestly didn’t choose this element because of where it was on the periodic table. And I didn’t choose Ruthenium because it’s hard to find or really rare. I honestly choose it because I liked the shiny-ness it gave off. I like the way it looked black and white at the same time. This element interested me because of how it looked. Now that I picked the element I’m more interested in it besides the looks.

History on Ruthenium;
Ruthenium was discovered in 1844 by Karl Karlovich Klaus. There is a possibility that a chemist ,Jedrzej Sniadecki, had isolated ruthenium from some platinum ores rather earlier than this in 1807 but apparently as he withdrew his

    During the early 1900s, newly discovered radium was quite popular. People were awed by its mysterious properties rather than it lethal affects. Many uses were found for its luminescence when mixed with a phosphor. Initially, radium was widespread among everyday necessities such as toothpaste, hair tonic, ointments, elixir etc. Furthermore, radium was also one of the first cancer treatments; it was used as a radiation source. Limited quantities were implanted in tumors to eliminate cancerous cells; ironically, one of the reason radium was, for the most part, discontinued, was because it turned out to be a cancer carcinogen itself. Many people drank radium in hopes to…

    An American Chemist named Glenn T. Seaborg discovered plutonium in 1941 at Berkeley University in California. The discovery of Plutonium was not announced until 1946 because America was at war with Japan and Germany. Plutonium was named after the planet Pluto, after the planet Neptune in the solar system and Neptune gave its name to Neptunium.

Plutonium is a silvery metal that turns yellow when exposed to air. It is warm to the touch due to the releasing radioactive energy from it. The atomic number of Plutonium is 94. It has an average atomic mass of 244. The symbol for plutonium is Pu. Plutonium is a lot like calcium. This is why take its place in bones, breaking down marrow cells and in doing so causing leukemia.

Plutonium appears very little in nature. It can be produced by bombarding uranium with the nucleus from a hydrogen ion. This hydrogen ion is called deuterium and so the nucleuses are called deuterons. There are 15 known isotopes of plutonium. They range from an atomic mass of 232 to 246. Plutionum-239 is thought to be the most important. It can be split into two parts called "fission fragments" that release large amounts of energy. It melts at 641 degrees Celsius and boils at about 3232 degrees Celsius.

Plutonium is made in large amounts by nuclear reactors. Since it 's easy to produce it is used a lot in nuclear weapons. An amount of Plutonium about the size of an orange is enough to fuel a nuclear reactor. It is also used as a battery in heart pacemakers. Furthermore, it has been used to power some forms of spacecraft.

Bibliography

Encyclopedia of science and technology, 7th edition. McGraw Hill, New York. The element that I was assigned me was Europium. Europium was originated or basically discovered in Europe. The root word of the word is (Euro). It was founded by a Eugene-Antole Demarcay in 1816. When first discovered he thought that samples of Samarium were in Europium, with also an element that is unknown. But around 1901, he could announce that it was pure Europium. Today this element is very rare. As my costume is shown I am a television. The reason I am a television is because one of Europium’s compounds is used as a red phosphor in television sets an yttrium-based phosphor.…
