Christian Service Reflection Paper
Christopher Leveratto
May 26, 2012
Scripture: Christian Service Reflection Paper Through the course of five weeks I have tutored a third grader by the name of Willy one hour each Thursday. Willy is a high-spirited kid who loves to learn. He goes to a school named Corpus Christi, a school I spent my sixth through eighth grade years at, and is also the organization I volunteered for. I chose this particular work because I love working with kids considering I have 4 younger brothers and sisters. This also gave me an opportunity to put my knowledge to good use and to be a good role-model towards Willy. What I gained from this experience is satisfaction from helping a young student cope with his academic struggles and learn to surpass them in order to be successful. I most definitely would do this project again if I had the chance.
For the remaining five hours that I needed to serve I had a close friend of mine shadow me during school. I chose this particular work because I’ve always regretted not getting to know what school at Bishop Ireton was like so I offered my friend the opportunity to do so. What I gained from this experience is happiness from seeing my close friend again and the guarantee that she’ll be coming to our school next year. I would love to do this again so I may encourage as many students to come to our school so they may be a part of our Salesian community.
Moses the prophet was a very loyal servant of God and he was the one who set the example for the Israelites while they were on his journey to the Holy Land. Since his encounter with God in the burning bush he was chosen to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. In this encounter God says to him, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a

Moses grew up as an Egyptian prince, and even though he had a good education and was brought up the Egyptian way, he knew, deep down, that he was a Hebrew. One day Moses saw an Egyptian killing a Hebrew and couldn't control himself. Without a second thought he killed Egyptian, and buried his body in the sand. The news soon spread and Moses was worried about what the Pharaoh was likely to do to him for his actions. And so he fled to Midian and saved Jethro’s daughter from the shepherds who drove them away from the troughs. Jethro was impressed and adopted him as his son. His daughter, Zipporah and Moses soon married and he became a superintendent of his herds. Moses than lived in Midian as a shepherd for 4 decades.…

As I was born and raised in a Buddhist family, I have always followed and practiced the doctrines and beliefs of Buddhism. Buddhism has become one of the most dominant parts in my life which guides me to a fulfilled spiritual life and proper attitudes towards other beings. Nevertheless, throughout the course about world religions that I am taking, I have decided to experience some festivals and rituals in other religions as the way to get exposed to the cultural diversity of the world. Hence, for my religious service review, I have chosen to study Christianity - one of the most influential and widespread religions. Since I have a friend who is working as social volunteer in Holy Family Catholic Church (1957 Coolidge Street, San Diego, CA 92111), I decided to obtain my realistic approach to Christianity by going to a regular Sunday mass and joining in some youth activities on 11/22/09 to have a deeper and objective comprehension of Christianity.…

In today’s extremely competitive, job-scarce economy, having a college degree is now a steadfast requirement when applying to even entry-level professional jobs. Choosing a college has always been a challenging task for high school seniors, but it is now fraught with stress and anxiety for nearly every adult who seeks to further their education. During my semester in Nature of the Learner I was placed in a second grade classroom at Johnson Street Elementary. This was a global studies school. I was very hesitant on my first day of going into the school. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I was excited to be in the classroom because second grade was my favorite age group to work with. During this placement I assumed that I would help out the kids within the class but I didn’t. My teacher had me help out this one little guy every week. I was able to help him with his writing and math. I enjoyed doing that but that left me with about five minutes in the actual classroom to observe. During this short amount of time I would walk around the room and ask the children if they needed help.…

One day, an old man named Shaul said to his grandson Simeon "It is time you learned the story of our people. I want to tell you about a tragic time for the Israelites, the time we spent in Egypt. and a great man named Moses who saved us from slavery. "I was only a boy then, just about your age," Shaul started. "All of the Israelites were slaves to the terrible Pharaoh, ruler of Egypt. Everyone, even the children, worked all day and into the night, making bricks to build Pharaoh's city. "One day I saw Moses walking proudly to Pharaoh's palace," said Shaul. "I was such a curious boy then I dropped my work and crept away. I wanted to hear what this brave man had to say. Let God's people go!' Moses told Pharaoh. "Set them free, or God will surely…

As apart of my service, I assisted in helping the community as well as others through the Notre Dame Annual Pilgrimage, Harvest Kitchen at St. Kevin’s Roman Catholic Church and participating in the Notre Dame Walk Against Male Violence. In October of 2010, I walked and raised money for the annual Pilgrimage at our school which involved trudging the distance from our school to the Allenburg Bridge. The money raised assisted those in third world countries mainly going to a facility called Yancana Huasy intended for the use by mentally and physically challenge young adults. The money is also sent to Haiti, Peru and the Dominican. As a volunteer for Harvest Kitchen my responsibility was to help deliver the meals to the people as well as work the handicap elevator in order to assist immobile people. Other duties included clearing dishes, socializing with others, setting up and serving food and drinks. Lastly, I also participated in the Walk Against Male Violence in which I was required to raise money and walk the 5 Kilometers as a method of raising awareness and money for abused women.…

Every week at a nearby elementary school, I tutor children from kindergarten to sixth grade as a part of their YMCA after school care program. Typically, I work with the same group of students to finish their math homework, work on a project for social studies, or help them sound out new words. By watching them thrive in a positive environment and develop a love for learning, they constantly teach me new things. After being at school all day and dealing with ample amounts of stress, their innocent and bright minds cause me to ground myself and realize what is at the core of all of my hard work in academics: a thirst for knowledge. Perhaps the most rewarding thing has been witnessing them improve dramatically, such as being able to read a word with ease that we sounded out multiple times the previous week, with a smile on their face and a new sense of confidence and accomplishment. Steadfastly teaching them that by working hard and not giving up they can reach their goals, it leaves me with such a proud feeling when I see them putting it into action. Tutoring has been a two-way street: the children have impacted my life in a positive and meaningful way just like I have impacted…

For this essay, I decided to write about Moses from the Bible because I believe he’s the most influential person in history and his story is my favorite of all. His story is inspiring and the way he led the people out of Egypt with the help of God really caught my attention. Another reason why I chose Moses for this essay is because no one on this earth had the privilege to be able to talk to God face to face and that’s really interesting. As well, in our history class, we learned about Hitler and the Holocaust and I was able to make connections with Moses’ story. This is the connection I was able to make: Moses led the people out of slavery in Egypt, but on their way to the the Promised Land, they began to complain and disobey God. Many years…
