The weather and temperature were the major conflicts in this story. The whole point of this trip was to hunt some animals down, but because of the weather and temperature, the animals were nowhere to be seen. “Each day it [would grow] colder” (para. 12), “[causing] the animals [to move] west or south to lower valleys” (para. 12). It was bound to snow anytime; and on “the fifth day [of the trip] there were two inches of snow on the ground” (para. 14). The hunters knew they would “have real trouble getting out” (para. 14) and they needed to decide whether to leave or to stay. “The snow on the dry grass made [the inclines] slippery” which is why “the boy had trouble keeping up” (para. 15) with his father. With the “snow and wind rising” (para. 19), the branches were getting icy as they “clawed at their clothing” (para. 21).…

All can relate to that one special time of the year, Christmas, when whole families unite and spend hours endlessly sharing stories, making memories, and of course, opening presents! What happens though, when all of the sentimental value of Christmas is replaced solely with physical value, the gifts? What would Christmas be like then? Richard Rodriguez takes the readers through one of his annual Christmases and brings to light, through his thoughts, the disconnect that exists between himself, his siblings, and his parents. Rodriguez’ chronological presentation of events with flashbacks, short, abrupt syntax, light-hearted attention to detail and concerned tone contribute to suggest his worried attitude toward his family.…
In the second stanza, the personification of "Christmas paddocks, aching in the heat", imitates the personas own feelings, and the words "aching in the heart" look like aching in the heart, which is what the persona feels like, as he has lost his wife. Christmas is also usually a time for family gathering, and this highlights how change has caused the widower to lead a life of loneliness and isolation. This stanza is also filled with negative imagery and mundane activities- "The windless trees, the nettles in the yard... and then I'll go in, boil water and make tea." The ... at the end of the sentence shows that the widowers day is filled with other activities that are more or the same, again highlighting his life that has a lack of change. The lack of punctuation in this stanza also reflects the widower's monotonous life and again shows how change can bring a life of isolation and loneliness.…

The story at hand is about much more than the ethics of hunting, and despite its ambiguous, if not non-existent plot, I thought it was rich with meaning. Packaged as a glimpse of life into a small group of people, set in a beautifully rustic and occasionally harsh environment, the story eludes to several themes such as relationships, human needs, addictions, fear, stereotypes, hypocrisy, and our perceptions of reality. Like an old, mysterious house with trap doors and hidden rooms, each time I read Antlers, I found something I didn't see before.…
The protagonist of the story is Mr. White. In the beginning, Mr. White seems greedy because he complained about where their family live and begged Sergeant Major Morris to give him the Monkey’s Paw. But Mr. White still wishes for something, just to test out if the talisman actually works. That wish only…
