Chapter Summary And Symbolism In Battle Royal
1) Symbol In chapter 15, the narrator comes across a coin bank when leaving Mary's house. The coin bank is a figurine is of a grinning black man, who when a coin is placed in its hand and a lever is pushed, tosses the coin into his mouth. More specifically, this can relate to the Battle Royal where the young black boys scavvanged up their winnings on the electrified carpet infront of an audiance that was mainly wealthy white people. To the white men, this exemplified the black men's despair to grab up any money they could, in a humiliating mannor, which was supplied by the white man himself. I think this symbol is significant because it symbolizes the reoccuring issue of black men being lesser equals of the white man, and it doesn't allow the narrator to forget about his "place" in society, …show more content…

He also addressed the issues that the Negro had with their own community. He used a metaphor of two vessels to represent the Negros. The two vessels were symbolic of the state of mind Negros were in shortly after the end of slavery. They were looking for handouts. The Battle Royal and the Lesson are different, yet similar great fiction written by Ralph Ellison and Toni Cade Bambara. The battle royal descriptions contain minute order, with details creating a word picture of place and setting: “It was a large room with a high ceiling. It was a chilly day on March 6, 2007. Me and my family were on 495 going to the Holy Cross Hospital with a slight delay of traffic. For some reason, I kept fiddling with my fingers, I was really nervous to see him. We took the exit 31A and we all shifted to the left since it was a sharp turn to the right. My big sister, Maisie, was on my shoulder and we shifted her head fell on my lap. She woke up and asked where we were. “We are almost there Maisie” my Dad said. We stopped at the traffic light and I fiddled with my fingers some more. “Stop fiddling with your fingers!” Maisie whispered to me. Within the Harlem Renaissance multiple artists created poems and stories dealing with their struggles with racism within America. Some of which were Battle Royal, by Ralph Ellison, If We Must Die, by Claude McKay, and We Wear the Mask, by Paul Lawrence Dunbar, and within all of these stories, similar themes, tones, and visuals are created by the authors in personal ways. An overall theme within these separate writings is the unfair treatment and oppression of colored people. Within Battle Royal Ellison shows this theme by telling about their personal experience with white people in their town forcing him and his peers to fight for the amusement of others, and his family’s ignorance of oppression before him. “They…

There are many symbols in the story; for example, black cigar, tuxedos, and the flag tattoo. The flag tattoo represents the American dream, something that the black boys were not able to have or achieve. The unknown narrator is one of the brighter students in the community and is given the opportunity to give a speech, but to give the speech, he has to go through many difficulties. First, he had to fight his other colored boys and second, he got electrocuted attempting to pick up coins— which turned out to be fake. The whole process of going through the trial is symbolic because the black community had to go through many troubles to gain freedom, and even after gaining freedom, they did not have it any easier because they were still discriminated…
