Christopher Columbus Opinion Essay My opinion of Christopher Columbus is that he should not be celebrated. Columbus was a man of many faults, which need to be acknowledged. He was a man, not a god, who made mistakes, but never truly learned from them. Here are a few of his major mistakes. One of his known faults was being involved in the slave trade. On his original voyage Columbus and his men arrived in the Caribbean where they seized six “Indians” to send back to Ferdinand and Isabella as slaves. The men used brute force to work on their plantations or mines until the natives died of strain. They also sent thousands back to Spain to be slaves for the wealthy, most of which died on the way over from Spain. Over all this may have been Columbus’ worst mistake. Another fault of his was the raping of native women. While in the Americas Christopher allowed, no, encouraged the raping of women. Most of his crew liked using 9-10 year olds the best. Columbus even wrote about this in his diary. “A hundred castellanoes are easily obtained for a woman as for a farm, and it is very general and there are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten are now in demand.” He said that he was a Christian, but I think not, for what Christian encourages and does something like that. A third fault of Columbus was just his plain treatment of the native people. Like when a native committed a minor crime, like running late for his plantation work, he would have his ears, nose, and even his hands cut off and strung around his neck as a warning to his people. He and his crew killed the infants of the natives for dog food if they were running low. They raped native women, enslaved all natives, and even beat the children for no reason. What kind of men do that, well now we know that Columbus and his crew were those kinds of men. After all you've read do you agree with me

Columbus was only doing what any other person under the ruling of a king and queen would have done back then, to serve and please them in any way possible. He wanted to show himself to his king in queen. Christopher of course is known for discovering America, but on the way there he did things that are frowned upon now. On his discovering he made the Natives into slaves, forced them to as he please or they would get punished. Columbus should not be bashed upon for his prejudices and brutality, back then it was all around the world and everybody was doing it, it wasn’t a wrong thing at this time.…

Many attribute Christopher Columbus with daring and ingenuity for having the initiative to sail into the unknown and discover North America. In reality, however, it was a mission doomed to failure. He ignored the (accurate) counsel of the top scientists of his day, insisting that his hypothesis that the world is round (true) was possible but if it was true then there would be an arc much larger than his calculations indicated between Europe’s west tip to the east of Asia, specifically India. Had he not stumbled upon North America, which he thought was India, (Hence Native Americans being referred to as Indians) his men would have mutinied or perished from dehydration or starvation. His folly led to an accidental discovery of a new continent, but was not based on his greatness. Rather, it was based on his ignorance and…

Christopher Columbus is a man who is known in society simultaneously as a hero and a villain of his time. What if the world had to pick only one, what would it be? Many new studies and scholars believe that Columbus was the villain of his story not a hero as past information would lead us to believe. Past documents were all written from Europe’s point of view, this lead to extremely biased documents because Europe was the side to profit unlike the Native Americans. Columbus was the antagonist of the new world due to how he forced the natives into slavery, he raped and robbed the natives he found, and how he slaughtered the natives if they could not collect enough gold.…

Columbus can be called a hero or a villain. He has made many choices in life to give himself these two titles. Columbus is a hero in many ways. “From his last year his reputation dripped.” (Fernandez) Columbus before he turned into a self centered person, he brought many new ideas to the table. He wanted to discover new lands and he did that. He found new lands as well which was success for Columbus. People were in awe of Columbus’s strength and heart to find these new lands and find them he did. ‘Therefore presented Columbus an unblemished hero.” (Fernandez) Some of the historians and people out there do not think about the violence he did. Christopher Columbus can in no way, shape, or form be considered a hero. A hero is someone who performs good deeds for the sake of others and not for their own benefit. Christopher Columbus did not do a single good deed in any of his four voyages in the late 1400 's. Christopher Columbus was not the founder of the Americas we live in today because he did not set a single foot on these grounds, even if he did there were already the natives who inhabited the land. When he first sited land it was further down south in the Caribbean Islands. Christopher Columbus can be considered the enforcer of slavery. Slavery was already going on when he left Spain. However, the natives could be used for trade with other goods, this was known as the slave trade. He and his crew basically enslaved a whole race of men, women, and children. When Christopher Columbus discovered what he thought to be the "New World", he had no idea that he would find a whole race of people. His intensions were to go out and find gold and spices to bring back to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in Spain.…

According to Eakin’s book, Columbus is a fanaticism who tries to find Asia in order to trade with people there for wealth. Columbus’s primary purpose is to find a place that is not Latin America. He only stumbles upon the Americas by accident. His motive is pure and benevolent. The urge to explore is human nature. Columbus is driven by this human nature for sailing out of Europe to Latin America in the spite of his miscalculation. He still thinks he arrived in the India before he dies. He calls the people on the American “Indian” which is used today when we refer to Native American people in America. All of his deeds are not intentionally harmful to Native American people at that time. He is somewhat…

This led to the exploitation of millions of Africans as slaves in Central and North America as well as the genocide of millions of Native Americans and the indigenous peoples in the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus brought more death and destruction to the world than any other person in history; however, he was inadvertently responsible for the wealth in Europe that brought about our current elaborate consumer economy. Fatuous students and historians scoff at the ironies of Columbus’ false positive discovery, nonetheless, he played a critical role in setting the tone of discovery and exploration that proliferated through the 16th century and…
