Christopher Mccandless: Inconsiderate
“I blame everyone but me. What I thought what was watching out for me was actually a razor blade wrapped around my wrist. Time wasn't on my side, it didn't have my back when confronted with my pride. Does it lead to the fall” (Brian Braille Winchester). In today’s world we do things without thinking of the people we might hurt, or the consequences that our decisions might lead to. After reading Into the Wild, I think that Christopher McCandless was Inconsiderate. In my opinion I think that McCandless was Inconsiderate of the people who really cared about him. Whether it was his family or the people he met along his idiotic journey McCandless did not take their feelings into consideration. This is seen in the book on chapter 13 of into the
wild where Carine says” I can’t seem to get through a day without crying. Not once have I been able to make a twenty minute drive home without thinking about Chris and breaking down”. I get that he had problems with his dad, so does 99.9% of American .but why would he embark on a journey in which he probably knew he was going to die and in doing so he would mentally destroy his sister who had the same problem as him. Some people might say he was brave, that he was just following his dreams. McCandless had this dream to go to Alaska to reinvent himself. He thought that if he were to live in the wild and survive out there he might be able to patch things up with his dad. He was wrong for doing this because he was reckless. If a person jumps out of a plane knowing there is a 25% chance that the parachute will not open, do we call this person brave or reckless? The average person with no map, no sense of how to survive in the wild, and no suitable clothing has a 25% chance of surviving. I tell you this statistic because now you know you can make an easier judgment and not a biased judgment based off of a book. In conclusion I think that McCandless was in fact a hippie and above all he was inconsiderate. In our society we ridicule this people, so why do we show mercy and compassion for a man who died a common death.
