“I am an apex predator.” Announces a blood-spattered Andrew Detmer played by Dane Dehann to his cousin Matt Garrety played by Alex Russell as they hover hundreds of feet above the ground of a dark and ravaged Seattle, Washington. The film Chronicle directed by Josh Trank is a fantasy filled drama about three average high-school students that obtain strange telekinetic abilities from some unknown “thing” they discover when exploring a vast underground cavern. The film takes a grim turn student Andrew Detmer begins to use the powers he has received to create mass destruction as well as to take revenge on his abusive father. Chronicle gives the audience a firsthand look at how bullying and mistreating others can turn even the most shy and insecure
Andrew abuses his powers yet again to help him rob a convenient store so that he could have money to buy his mother’s pain medication. In the process, the entire gas station gets blown up and Andrew gets caught in the flames, leaving him covered in third degree burns. He is taken to a hospital where we see him lying in a medical bed wrapped from head to toe with bandages. His father enters the room and begins to yell at him and informs him that his mother has died. He blames Andrew for her death and begins crying uncontrollably, and then Andrew finally
He is no longer the quiet and soft-spoken social outcast. Everything he that comes out of his mouth from this point on has an extremely intense and powerful tone to it. When Matt and Andrew are hovering beside the Space Needle, Andrew yells dominantly at Matt, “I am stronger than you.
