Chronicle Of A Death Foretold By Gabriel Garcia Marquez

In Marquez’s novel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, he talks about Angela Vicario, who is told by her parents that she must marry Bayardo San Roman, a wealthy and mysterious stranger who knows from the secind he sees Angela, that she is the woman he wants to marry. She has no choice but to agree with the agreement, particularly since her family is the main reason. The author uses characterization to illustrate the theme of a Latin community where women are powerless and show how women were necessary to follow serious social and cultural expectation. Women can’t choose the life they want to live; their life was decided on their cultural religion they live in. In the text it states “The girls had been reared to get married. They knew how to do screen embroidery, sew by machine, weave bone lace, wash and iron, make artificial flowers and fancy candy, and write engagement announcements” ( 34 ). Purisima del Carmen, Angela mother, wanted her daughters to be just like her and take care of duties like the perfect wives. Followed by that, in the text Purisima stated “They’re perfect. Any man will be happy with them because they’ve been raised to suffer.” (pg. 34) This part of the text example how Purisima take her religion serious and wanted to make sure when her daughters become wives they become the perfect wife even if they have to suffer and never be truly happy or in love. The characterization of Purisima shows she is a strict mother, and also a person that she emphasize the importance of tradition and culture, she believe in carrying out the dutiful and expected role of a wife rather than being truly happy and in love before
