These aren’t the fairytales that everyone grows up hearing (Myint, 1). The Grimm Brothers are two of the best authors in European literature. These German brothers are the reason behind the original fairytales popularity (Myint, 1). When Wilhelm and Jacob were young boys their father who was a lawyer died, this not only brought the boys closer together but this left their family having to depend on financial support to get by (Advameg, 2). Living in poverty made the boys focus on studies rather then having a social life, this allowed them to become professors. However,
King Augustus wanted them to take an oath and when they refused they were forced to leave the city, this is when they began working on writing (Myint, 1). The Grimm Brothers went around and asked different villagers and peasants to tell them stories, they then recorded what they said and used it to create the fairytales (Advameg, 2). Many of their fairytales were not meant for young audiences because they included sex, violence, and incest (Myint, 1). At this time it was the early 1800’s and the culture promoted deep, dark stories like this, so many copies were sold (Advameg, 1). By 1859 their collection had 211 stories included, their collection of stories had only been beneath Shakespeare and the Bible at one point in time (Myint, 2). Even though during their seventh edition Wilhelm died they were still very famous. In result of his death Jacob was not the same because of how tight knit they were and later passed on himself in 1863 (Myint, 2). Without the Grimm Brothers literature would not be the same.
