Cinematography In Me Before You

In the film Me Before You directed by Thea Sharrock there are many good uses of cinematography. In the beginning of the film there are a lot of shots that show Lou standing and looking towards Will while Will is in his wheel chair facing the opposite direction. This helps develop the relationship Will and Lou have in the beginning as a relationship where they don't really like each other but have to get along. In the beginning when they show Lou and Will together there is not a lot of music or talking. This makes those scenes very quit which adds to the disconnection between Will and Lou. The room that Will lives in does not have a lot of color and is pretty boring. This adds to Will being unhappy with life.

In the beginning Lou wears very interesting clothes. Lou's and Will's costume plays an important role throughout the film. Lou wears clothes that are very colorful in most of the scenes. In the interview scene her parents make her wear clothes that are more normal and
during the interview her skirt rips. This could be foreshadowing that there will be more conflicts after she gets the job. In the beginning the clothes that Will wears are very boring and plain. He dresses in a lot of dark colors and is always wearing the same clothes. This is one of the ways that the film reveals that Will is not happy with life. Lou on the other hand has a different costume in almost every scene. This shows that Lou is really into clothes but has a strange taste of them.

Lou usually has a happy look on her face until she overheard Will's parents arguing about the letter they got in the mail.
The letter is for Will to go to Switzerland to end his life. Will's mom is not happy about it but his dad wants Will to get what he wants. When Lou hears this she runs away crying. This shows that now she has become attached to Will. Later in the film there are many shots that show Will and Lou together. Lou tries to make the 6 months that Will has amazing so that he might change his mind. The film shows that they are happy together and having fun by showing long takes of them together. There is also a lot more music and talking than there was in the beginning. The film chose songs that went excellently with a lot of scenes and really add to the mood. They are happy until the end when Will tells Lou that he has not changed his mind about going to Switzerland. After that there are a lot of shots show showing Lou ignoring Will like Will did to her in the
beginning.

As the film goes on and Will and Lou start going places together, Will starts to dress in more interesting clothes. This could be a sign that he is happier now and enjoying the time he gets to spend with Lou. Lou's costume style does not change a lot throughout the film but she has a different costume in almost every scene. In the scene when Will and Lou go to the concert Lou wears a red dress with a scarf and when Will tells her that she should take the scarf off of she wears a dress like that and she does. The dress is not something normal for her to wear. This shows that Lou is more confident when she is around Will. In the end there was a scene that shows Lou in Paris reading a letter from Will. She is wearing her favorite clothes that Will gave her, which look strange but she is confident in what she wears. In the letter Will gives her money to follow her dream of being a clothes designer. This shows that Will really did care about Lou and wanted the best for her.
