New products, trend in shopping and competition were the key trends that needed constant monitoring and review as part of the strategic analysis. Circuit city did introduce new products and technology, but failed to recognize the threat from the online competition and the convenience technology bringing to the consumers. The external macro environment such as social adjustment, competition and technology introduced new opportunity as well as threats.

According to Llovio (2012), the CEO of Circuit City Alan said the company underestimated the change in consumer taste, the change in consumer buying patterns and clearly underestimated the rapid rise of Best Buy and Circuit City was too slow to react to a changing market.
