Word on the Street
Sherlock Holmes http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/word-street/sherlock-holmes Wendy: The streets of London are full of history. But not all the famous characters associated with this city were real. More than a hundred years ago when people travelled by horse and cart and the foggy streets were lit by gaslight, one famous detective was leading the fight against crime. It was Victorian London, the time of Sherlock Holmes.

What makes Sherlock Holmes so interesting?

Roger: He’s a hero, but he’s a flawed hero in a way. He doesn’t have superpowers in the way that, say, Superman does or the Marvel
Avengers. He’s a real human being and you can feel with Sherlock Holmes as you can’t do with
Superman, ‘Yeah, I could be like that’.

The fictional character of Sherlock Holmes has been popular ever since he was created by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the late 1800s.
Since then, Holmes has appeared in many films… Wendy: Why is he still so popular?

Roger: The main reason is that the original stories are so good. They’re very well written and they’re tremendous fun to read.

Roland Carstairs: Mr Holmes?

Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone): Hello.

ou nc Wendy: …from black-and-white classics to
Hollywood blockbusters and TV dramas.

Even though Sherlock Holmes wasn’t a real person, you can find evidence of him all over
London. There is a statue of Sherlock Holmes near Baker Street. Just around the corner, you can find his famous address, 221B. Ah, look!
More evidence of Sherlock Holmes, a pub named after him. Let’s pop in.

Wendy: The Metropolitan Police Heritage
Museum shows the history of policing in
London. Holmes was famous for his use of forensic or scientific techniques to solve crimes.
His creator, Conan Doyle, visited police museums to gain inspiration for his stories. Alan
Moss is a former policeman and historian.

Wendy: Police methods and crime-solving techniques have changed since the time of
Sherlock Holmes. New technology means the scientific or forensic method is even more important. ng

So there’s evidence of Sherlock Holmes all across London. It looks like he’s going to continue being a popular fictional character for many more years to come. I wonder what
Sherlock would make of today’s forensic work and policing techniques. I guess we’ll never know. h lis Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone): On the contrary, my dear fellow. If my assumptions are correct, this little scheme has behind it the most brilliant and ruthless intellect the world has ever known. Alan: He was really interested in real-life crimes, but actually making those crimes into a really good story.

le

Dr Watson (Nigel Bruce): Well, whoever’s behind all this thing must be out of his mind.

g/ or There are lots of Sherlock-related things inside the pub. The pub even has its own room which is supposed to look like Sherlock Holmes’ study with his famous pipe and laboratory instruments for his forensic or scientific approach to solving crimes. You can just imagine Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Doctor Watson discussing how to solve crimes here.

Do you think it was useful for Conan Doyle to visit places like this?

Wendy: Roger Johnson is from the Sherlock
Holmes Society of London.

The famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is known for his keen observation skills and logical thinking that has outsmarted criminal masterminds. His ability to conclude a theory from reason and logic is impressive; however, “It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts" (Scandal, 3). For his cases, Holmes gathers up data and information in any way he can, one being the art of disguise. The use of disguises play a significant part in crime solving because they allow Holmes to conceal his identity so he can gather information and ultimately deceive society.…

Imagine you committed a crime but were let free even though it is breaking the law for a police officer to do that. Sherlock Homes a detective that is beyond their technology that they should have used science to find evidence to crimes. In one of his stories he solved the crime about a missing carbuncle (jewel) and after he found out who did it he let them go like it was nothing. In my opinion Sherlock made the wrong decision. He should not have let them go for stealing it is illegal what he did.…

Sherlock Holmes is a very strange man. He is a detective who can solve a mystery without even seeing what seems to be like too much evidence. His ethics are very interesting. He believes that murder cases turn out to have very complex ways of happening. He does not believe in the solar system, which the narrator thought was very weird. His decision to join the case to help was a just decision, because without him the case wouldn’t have been solved correctly. Holmes seems to always stick with his beliefs, not matter what the situation was, even after the case seemed like it was solved.…

Sherlock Holmes is a name with an enigmatic connotation. It means magnifying glasses and a British accent to most people. However, to me, it means noticing the obvious. It means finding deep, lasting friendship, alongside solutions to seemingly impossible mysteries. Sherlock Holmes is a mystery in and of himself, and that’s what makes him alive. The same goes for me, for you, and for the rest of the universe. Holmes taught me that our mysteries are solvable, no matter how complex, and that was one of the most valuable lessons I’ve ever…

There are always going to be challenges in teams but having a plan that will effectively address the challenges will help to mediate the severity of the challenges. If challenges are left alone and not addressed they can lead to team conflicts, misunderstandings, arguments, poor performance, project failures, resentment, and loss of motivation. As a team it is in its best interest to clearly set guidelines that will mitigate problems and reduce the risk of challenges the team may face. Before the team can set guidelines that address challenges that the majority of teams face the team must clearly define challenges that may lead to bigger problems within the team.…

Sherlock Holmes is one of the most important characters in literature. He is one of a handful of characters in which people actually believe to be real. Part of this is simply the weight of history but it is also because he is one of the most complex and flawed characters in history. With four novels and fifty six short stories he has remained part of society for well over a hundred years and shows no sign of becoming dated.…
