Title of Assignment: In paragraph 4, Pindling states that he is “disturbed about reports that some workers are slacking on their jobs, thinking that they no longer need to work hard.” This statement reflects a commonly-held view that many Bahamians have a poor work ethics. Write a text-based expository essay in which you explain why you think that many Bahamians (civil servants and others) today have or do not have a poor work ethic.
Like Bahamian artist Kirkland Bodie quoted in his song “Who you working for, the government dem’, what you is do? Sit around. What you waiting for pay day, who give you that job? My MP, what time your work start? When I reach. What time you get off? Any time. What time is it now? Snake time.” In 2004, Mr. Bodie released a song in title ‘Civil Servant’ mainly describing civil servants and others today in The Bahamas. According to Sir. Lynden Pindling’s nine minute radio broadcast on Tuesday January 17th, 1967, he spoke roughly about workers slacking on their jobs and not working hard. This shows that from 1967 to now, the lack of work ethics throughout The Bahamas has not made a change. I agree that there are a large number of workers that have poor work ethics because they are not qualified, their work quality is poor and discourteous towards customer service.
Firstly, a major issue why a number of Bahamians have poor work ethics is that they are not qualified. Every five years during election time, many government jobs are given to unqualified Bahamians. This causes unqualified persons to receive jobs easily although they are not qualified. When The Bahamas became an independent country and the government was now black, Bahamians thought they did not have to work as hard. They started slacking on their jobs, not working hard while at work and depended on the government more than ever. Also, they thought it was ideal for them not to work
