Pages 1
The three drugs that I decided to explore a little more are alcohol, crack, and ecstasy. In this essay I will be discussing the difference between each drug. I will also be talking about how each drug effect the person mind and health. By the end of this essay my goals is to inform you on all the facts about these three drugs. The first one that will be covered is alcohol. Alcohol is part of the depressant group. When drinking alcohol it can affect different …show more content…
people in different ways. “These effects can lead to physical and mental changes that can put alcohol users and others at risk of injury or death. Possible dangers include falls, household accidents, and car crashes.”(nihseniorhealth.gov) Alcohol is something that if done in a social and responsible matter the possible danger that was stated above can be avoided. Some of the health effects of alcohol are that it can affect all the major organs including the brain. Things like the liver can be affecting by too much use of alcohol, “which cause diseases such as liver inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis) or severe liver scarring (cirrhosis). Alcohol-related liver disease can cause death.”(nihseniorhealth.gov) However, as much as studies show how harmful alcohol is this drug is the only one that if use in moderation can be beneficiary to your health. When dealing alcohol on psychologically level there is things that can happen when you consume alcohol “at higher levels it leads to disorientation, coma, and death.”(brainblogger.com) There are also really bad things that can happen when alcohol is being abuse for a long period of time. “At high enough concentrations (or over time) alcohol can weaken the blood brain barrier by damaging the tight junctions of blood vessels in the brain that form the barrier.”(brainblogger.com) In certain studies it shows
Page 2 that people who drink at high level are link to disease like Parkinson’s Disease and vascular dementia. The second drug that will be discussed is crack.
Crack is part of the stimulants family. This drug is one the drug that the high isn’t that long. “Crack smokers achieve maximum physiological effects approximately two minutes after inhalation. Maximum psychotropic effects are attained approximately one minute after inhalation. Similar to intravenous administration, the physiological and psychotropic effects of inhaled cocaine are sustained for approximately 30 minutes after peak effects are attained.”(Drug-effects.com) After reading this I now understands why people chase a crack high more. When smoking crack some of the mental affect that come with it is the magnification of pleasure, euphoria, alertness and in some cases - hyper-alertness, ,increased and sometimes a (grandiose) sense of well-being, and decreased anxiety. “The long term effect of crack use is an increased risk of psychological disorder, such as agoraphobia, depression, and psychosis. Users may experience agitation, mood swings, and the inability to experience pleasure. One of the most severe symptoms of long term crack use is psychosis and delusions that resemble schizophrenia. Sometimes untreatable, this symptom may persist throughout the user's
life.”(treatment4addiction.com) “The physical effect of crack can affect many parts of your body from feel fatigue to not being able to sleep. There is however there are more intense things that can happen. Physically, people who smoke crack are at increased risk of heart attack or stroke because crack abuse causes high blood pressure and can cause the aortic artery to tear. Crack addicts may also be more susceptible to other illnesses because they don’t eat or sleep enough and may not be Page 3 attentive to their hygiene. Finally, smoking crack puts users at risk of lung disease because they are introducing foreign substances into their lungs.”(drugabuse.com) I know that when I was in active addiction my hair would fall out and also my skin would also look real dark. I have even seen people who lost their teeth because of crack. The sad thing about crack is it only take that one hit to bust your heart and kill you. Ecstasy also known as MDMA is part of the hallucination family. “Although predominately used in a club setting, MDMA use has recently moved to private environments, house parties, college dorms and high schools.”(channel.nationalgeographic.com) This is one the drug that the younger generation are using today. “Ecstasy is a synthetic, psychoactive drug that has similarities to both the stimulant amphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline.”(drugabuse.gov) Ecstasy comes in a pill form. When taking this pill you will feel full of energy as well a sense of wellbeing. Ecstasy can last three to six hours however this drug is usually mix with other drugs to get a higher affect.” For example some urban gay and bisexual men report using MDMA as part of a multiple-drug experience that includes cocaine, GHB, methamphetamine, ketamine, and the erectile-dysfunction drug sildenafil (Viagra).”(drugabuse.gov)
Ecstasy has many different effects when come to a person body. With this drug it can some damaging things. “Some of the most common effect of ecstasy is dry mouth, jaw clenching and there is also nauseate.” In high doses, MDMA can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate temperature. On rare but unpredictable occasions, this can lead to a sharp increase in
Page 4 temperature, which can result in liver, kidney, cardiovascular system failure, or death.”(channel.nationalgeographic.com) One thing that really surprise me about ecstasy is that user are so concern that about being dehydrated, they can actually drink too much water. This is call hypernatremia, this when the brain swell up and you die. When dealing with ecstasy on a psychological side, it can also do long and short term problem. When taking ecstasy it can cause high blood pressure and make your heart rate increase. It can also cause trouble with sleeping, anxiety, depression, and confusion. As far as the long term affects is that “there is some evidence in prior research that a drop in serotonin leads to sleep apnea, depression, anxiety and memory loss.”(medicinenet.com) When I look at all three of these drugs they all have many different things about them. For example two out three of the drug that was talked about in paper can do some type good to human body. With alcohol it is said that a glass wine is good for the heart. It also been known for some doctor to give patients who was anti-social, and have social behavior problem small amount MDMA. However, they all have their unique way of destroying lives and family. There are many things that we can do as a community to spread the word on how dangerous all drugs can be. Then maybe we can save on youth at a time then we just maybe can start winning this war on drugs
