This paper will discuss two metropolitan areas with different data. Which area had more reported incidents will also be discussed with the rates of the crime for each area. This paper will also discuss the rates change over time in both areas and what factors might explain the differences in the rates.
The UCR Program compiles data from monthly law enforcement reports or individual crime incident records transmitted directly to the FBI or to centralized state agencies that then report to the FBI (Uniform Crime Reports 2014).
Oakland, California has a population of 406,253 as of 2013 according to the United States Census Bureau. In the wild streets of Oakland, CA they are reeling from a seemingly unstoppable spike in murders along with street crime spike that was crazy high..
The killing scale is appalling. Not to mention that the casualty rate for the young Black men in Oakland is higher than our young Black men in the U.S. military fighting over in Afghanistan. Over the course of the 11-year occupation of Afghanistan, 1,200 U.S. soldiers have died, a quarter of them African American. In Oakland, roughly the same amount people have been murdered, and over 80 percent of them have been young Black men ("What Will Stop The Violence In Oakland", 2013).
Oakland is known to be as one of the most violent cities in the nation, mostly because of its high murder rate. The Oakland Police Department has not prioritized homicide investigations but has tired to put its focus on patrolling the city streets. Studies have shown that in 2012, OPD only had solved just about 28 percent of the cities homicide. This is part of the reason the department had to come under intense criticism for its investigative shortcomings.
Burglary average in the year of 2000 per population of 100,00 ,was at average of 729. In Oakland, CA the average was 939. Burglary was not the only thing that Oakland had going on
