Darrow helped Ossian Sweet, an African American, the guy was charged for supposedly murdering one of the KK Klan member but, Ossian was found guilty so what Darrow did he helped Ossian drop the death penalty. Later on that day the judge was thinking it over and made his decision and gave Ossian prison for life instead, of death penalty(Darrow biography). Darrow was proud of himself because he succeeded his goal.
