He has hid his knowledge for so long so when he met a girl who questions everything, he enjoys it. Unlike Mildred, Clarisse is alive and interesting. She is a rarity that helps break him out of his trance-like state induced by the government. She makes Montag begin to think by asking questions, beginning with the simple yet deep, "Are you happy?" (Page 7.) Everything about Clarisse is different from her open-minded manner and to her family who conversate with each other. Clarisse and Mildred are both key characters in the story so that the reader can fully understand the differences between the remaining societies. An example of those differences between Mildred and Clarisse is how well they incorporate into the society, the effects they have on Montag, and their appearance. To my way of thinking I believe that Ray Bradbury wanted to establish various characters and beliefs so that the person reading the story could judge for themselves which way of living fit into the modern society
