Class Reflection
In Dr. Susan Morrison’s Literacy in the Primary Grades (ELED 3523) class I was assigned to create a repetitive pattern book. As a group, we discussed the assignment in class on March 28th, and on April 6th we went to North West Heights Elementary School to work with the first grade students to create the book. I had four students in my group that I worked with. Once we completed creating the story on April 6th, I left to go type, print, laminate, and bind the story. On April 18th, I went back to the school for the children to illustrate their own books. The books I used to introduce the concept of repetitive pattern was “Five Little Ducks” illustrated by Ivan Bates, and “Just for YU You” by Mercer Mayer. The reason I chose these two books

Although Michael’s attention varied in reading, he had a 100% attention span in the other areas of observation. For example, during the three Art periods, the introduction to the Freedom Quilt Blocks was new content that challenged his thinking. After giving the instructions on how to complete the worksheet pages, the first example of modeling a small block and replicating it on the bigger block stumped him. Michael turned to his peer and asked, “What…

To define yourself as a Christian is to believe in God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the text of the Holy Bible. Many believers think that this is all it takes to be welcomed into Heaven and enjoy the afterlife in peaceful bliss with their maker. Much of what has been learned in this class these past two months has given me the opportunity to explore Christianity beyond face value, as it should be explored. The true model Christian delves into the inner workings of the scripture…

1.2 – Throughout children’s development, activities and milestones can link into more than one learning area. To give an example of this, I draw on an activity I carried out and observed, involving a child who attended a nursery I was an employee at. It was a creative activity based around a book. First, we had to read the book, which encouraged the child to use their literacy skills as they handled the printed pages with interest. The reading also linked to personal, social and emotional development as the child climbed onto my knee to listen to the story. They were one of my key children, who I had a duty to build a special bond with. After we had finished the book I brought it over to the creative table. The child followed me and sat down. I gave them some paper and a paint brush and indicated to the page they could copy off. The picture was of a bear. The child used their fine motor skills to dip the brush into the paint and to move it around the paper.…

Teaching Strategies: Read the story “The Foot Book” to the children every day for a week. On the first day read the story in its entirety, afterward ask the children open-ended questions about the story. On the second day re-read the story in its entirety, when you finish show the children the pictures and have them retell the story based on the pictures they see. On the third day read a few sentences then stop and have the kids tell the next few sentences, taking turns between the teacher and the children. On the fourth day the teacher reads a word or two then stops allowing the kids to finish the sentence, alternating again between teacher and students. On the fifth day the teacher is to only turn the pages as the students tell the story.…

The term learning to me means that we are acquiring knowledge for something we did not know or a new way of doing something. I think online learning is different than traditional because online learning is more of independent studies and can be easier or more difficult to manage depending on each person's learning styles. My view of learning as only changed by knowing more learning styles and how they can vary in technical terms.…

In the education profession, it is necessary for teachers to create lesson plans that adhere to national, state, and district learning standards. The ability to successfully create and implement these lessons that have goals and specific learning objectives is the responsibility of the teacher. A way to evaluate the success of your instructional skills is through reflection and self-evaluation. “Reflecting on your own teaching, shortcomings as well as successes, is a way to make sense of your own experiences and to gain perspective on the day-to-day workings of your own classroom.” A reflection and self-evaluation will be listed for this Teacher Work Sample., which will include an analysis of instructional and student learning, and the effectiveness of teacher instruction.…

Everyone is likely to experience some form of discrimination or prejudice; as is anyone capable of acting prejudiced towards others. On April 5th, 1968, a teacher in Riceville, Iowa named Jane Elliot conducted an experiment with her third grade class that dealt with the concept of discrimination; and was documented in Peters’ 1985 ‘A Class Divided’. The exercise originally took place the day after Martin Luther King was assassinated. The documentary is an eye opener to the world of racism and discrimination. Bucher (2010) describes racism as “discrimination based on the belief that one race is superior to another” (97). According to Bucher (2010) “discrimination is defined as the unequal treatment of people on the basis of their group membership” (100). Bucher goes on to say “treatment varies because of race, age, gender, social class or any number of other dimensions of diversity” (100). ‘A Class Divided’ exposes that discrimination doesn’t just go to the extent to the color of skin, culture or ethnicity, but discrimination can fall into any physical characteristics, social status, having a developmental disability, simply being a woman, and in this case the color of your eyes.…

To be honest, I think the class was organized just right even though it was a very fast course. It seemed like we covered a lot of ground in just few months. I feel like I got more out of this class than I have in some of the other classes I have spent entire semesters in. I also found it helpful that there was some variation in the assignments.…

Aims: The aim of this assignment is to demonstrate and plan a story to read to a group of children aged 2 and half to 4. I chose this age group because this is the group I work with on a daily bases from 9:30 to 12:30 five days a week. I am picking a story called “Oh Dear” by Rod Campbell who is a Scottish writer and illustrator of several popular children's books including the classic lift-the-flap board book “Dear Zoo”. As it is a story that helps the children with learning the different animals on the farm and also encourages the children to use their imaginations as they lift up the different flaps in the book to see what is behind them. Which Maria Montessori says “Imaginative teaching materials are the heart of the process”. All of Rod Campbell’s “books have simple text often with repeating phrases which is ideal for pre-readers” and will also Help the children with langue and intellectual skills. “The child proceeds at his own pace in an environment controlled to provide means of learning” -Maria Montessori. this book also helps the children physically as they have to get up to lift up the flaps on the book “movement is therefore the essential of life education cannot be conceived of ad a means to moderate or worse to inhibit movement; it should only function as an aid to a better expenditure of energy whilst allowing it to develop normally” -Maria Montessori pg 102 discovery of a child. “The aim of the children who persevere in their work with an object is certainly not to “learn”; they are drawn to it by the needs of their inner life, which must be recognized and developed by its means.” – Maria Montessori pg 120 discovery of a child. To develop their attention spans…
