McKay was born on September 15, 1889 in Sunny Ville Claredon Parish, Jamaica. Youngest of eleven McKay was sent to live with his oldest brother, a schoolteacher, to receive a better education. At the age of ten McKay began to write poetry and was also an avid reader. McKay then moved to the U.S in 1912 to attend Booker T. Washington Institute. Where he encountered wide spread of racism.
