Claustrophobia In The Educator By William Sleator
When I was in elementary school I was terrified of needles. Ever since I got over my fear of them, I think back and have no idea why I was so scared of them. Needles are just small thin pointy objects that can barely do any harm to you. In the story, The Elevator, by William Sleator, a 12 year old boy named Martin is trying to deal with his egregious fear. I can understand that he has claustrophobia, because as far as I know claustrophobia is a common fear. However his paranoia and intimidation are pathetic. Since Martin has dealt with all of his fears every single day he is probably scarred at this point in his life.

Without any doubt, Martin’s biggest fear is the fat lady. “ It wasn’t possible. It was like a nightmare. But there she was massively real, “going up!” he said his voice a humiliating squeak.”(line 90) This shows this shows that Martin is definitely sacred of the fat lady since whenever he saw his voice started to squeak. “ He felt her eyes on him as he stared at the numbers slowly blinking on and off-slower than usual, it seemed to him”. (line 102) This again explains, like the other quote, that martin knows that she is not like other people, because everyone tries to avoid eye contact and it makes him feel desperate.

“After that, Martin forced himself to take the elevator.” (line 23) Because Martin despises being judged being judged by his dad, he forces to do things that terrify him. “He managed not to cry until he got up to his room- but his father probably knew he was crying. He slept very little.” (line 138) Like before, Martin hates being judged by his father and when he is he breaks

In paragraph twelve of his letter, we can see that Martin uses the repetition of “When you” to show the current limitations and struggles of the negro race. The serious blow of heartbreak is when he claims that he could not take his child to Funland based off the color of her skin. He next uses the trope “There comes a time when the cup of endurance runs over, and men are no longer willing to be plunged into the abyss of despair” What this trope shows is that there is a breaking point, a time where one can not fight anymore. This shows his passion for fighting now, not later for inalienable…

“As a child, Martin never had a real home… When they finally stopped moving, it was too late for Martin. He couldn’t settle. He had never stayed anywhere long enough to make friends or keep up with his schoolwork. His family wanted to help him but didn't know how. He began skipping school and spending more and more time on the streets with other truants. At first it was great. The group begged on the streets and on the streets and in the shopping malls. Sometimes they stole clothes or videos and CDs. It was only a matter of time before Martin was caught” (Stearman, 7).…

During Joseph Martin journey in the revolution war he found himself not agreeing with many of the things the other soldiers were used to doing. The other soldiers were used to always getting what they wanted, when they wanted it. In order to do this, whenever they needed something, such as food they would just barge into nearby homes and demand for what they wanted. Most home owners knew that if they didn't do what the soldiers asked, that things would go very bad quickly. Meaning a large amount of the home owners would just be friendly and give the soldiers what they wanted just to keep the peace. Also some of the home owners enjoyed getting a visit from the soldiers because it made them fell wanted and thankfully to help support a fellow soldier. Martin didn't have the same view as many of the soldiers did on this certain activity. Well he was involved with doing that activity he would feel guilty and wanted to apologize to the family because he didn’t think they deserved such a thing. He didn’t enjoy doing it because he believed it was rude and that they were abusing their power of authority. Before he went to war he learned right from wrong and would never imagine doing such a thing to innocent citizens in the area. The only reason that he would participate in this activity was because Soldiers during the war had been doing it prior to when he entered the war and he didn't want to deal with all the others soldiers by telling them his real opinion on it. Also he needed the items the other soldiers were asking for as well but just wanted there to be another way for them to get it. Even though he didn't agree with many of the things he had to do while he was gone at war, going into other people's home uninvited was the thing he disagreed with the most.…

Martin also shows a lack of respect for Corene through his violation of politeness. Yule argues that within a social setting there are “general principles for being polite in [a] social interaction,” (1996, p. 60) and those who take part in a conversation are “generally aware that such norms and principles exist.” (1996, p. 60) Politeness shows a respect for another person’s place in society, in this case, as an authority figure. In familiar social settings, people involved in a conversation will ideally “show awareness of another person’s face” (Yule, 1996, p. 60), in other words, respect each other’s self-image.…

Martin is at home reviewing Mrs. Barrows case and he finally lets the readers know what it is he intends to do to her. That being sentencing her to death. This is the inciting incident because while Erwin did mention that he planned to “rub out” Mrs. Barrows it was said in such a lighthearted way it did not seem as if he truly intended to kill her. Moreover, during this portion of the story Thurber moreso dances around the subject of his plan allowing most of this section to be backstory, explaining who Mrs. Barrows was, and why Martin disliked her.…
