Clay Sizemore's Quilt Short Story
People are always going to ask the question “What if?” “What if I didn’t go that way?” or “What if I never met this person?” Well, maybe we should all ask the question, “What if Clay Sizemore’s mother never was killed?”There are many important events in Clay’s Quilt that help give us an outlook on Clay Sizemore’s life. If Clay’s mother hadn’t passed away then he probably never would have lived with his Aunt Easter and Uncle Paul. This also means he wouldn’t have met all the townspeople and neighbors around him. Living with his aunt and uncle is a major factor to the whole plot.
Since his Aunt Easter practically raised Clay and turned him into the man he was, she is the mother figure. His aunt provides him with love, shelter and all the necessities

Background is not the only element of culture that shapes our view of others and the world. Parental influence is another element of culture that shapes our view of others and the world. Parents can sometimes influence how someone views others and the world. In Teresa Acosta’s poem “my mother pieced quilts” the author views her mother’s work of piecing quilts. Teresa Acosta admires her mother’s work of piecing quilts. But it was just that every morning I awoke to these October ripened canvases. This supports the claim because this is a somewhat influence of what the author sees the world. I remember when I was ten or eleven years old there was this lady who made scarves, hats and blankets. This view of the winter attire showed me a way of…

It is important to look forward to the future while still remembering the past. In Marilyn Nelson Waniek’s poem “The Century Quilt,” a comfortable tone and detailed symbolism work together to reveal how a family heirloom can be both a reminder of heritage and as well as a representation of dreams for the future. Throughout the poem, the poet’s cozy tone elicits a sense of happy nostalgia, showing the character’s contentment with the thoughts that the quilt causes her to reflect upon. Phrases such as, “Each square holds a sweet gum leaf whose fingers I imagine would caress me into the silence,” and “I think I’d have good dreams for a hundred years under this quilt, as Meema must have” show that she takes comfort in her remembrance. This conveys…

Family, for some has always been the glue that holds people together, whether liked or not, like branches on a tree, spreading its leaves for what seems like miles. In "The Century Quilt" by Marilyn Nelson Waniek, the speaker creates a simile of her grandmother's blanket and her quilt, beginning with explaining the memorable colors and thoughts about her grandmother's blanket and continuing with her quilt. In "The Century Quilt", Waniek gives the poem complex meaning through literary techniques such as diction to add complexity and to give insight to the meaning, imagery to show the connection of the speaker's family, and symbolism to show the similarities of the speakers quilt and her grandmother's blanket.…

She also sufferers from severe depression over losing her leg which is common among many with physical disabilities. Despite, her poor health Cora Jackson remains the matriarch of the family. Mrs. Jackson raised Jackie as a young girl and before becoming ill, had a remarkable relationship with her great-granddaughter Latrice. As time goes on, Mrs. Jackson becomes more ill and Latrice begins to pull away from her great-grandmother. This seems understandable because it must be very difficult for children to understand and deal with the terminally ill. Jackie however, remains warm and caring toward her grandmother. She expresses her frustrations, but few of them are aimed at her grandmother. Most of them are aimed at the doctors and particular government agencies set up to treat and help her grandmother.…

The oldest sister, Patria, came across many complications throughout her life but she did not have to go through it alone. Patria was the oldest Mirabal sister of the four girls. She was the sister who wanted to go away and become a nun; however her Papa disagreed upon the matter “Patria as a nun would be a waste of a pretty girl” (Alvarez 11). Once Patria was sent away to school she realized being the religious one of the Mirabal family was indeed what she wanted, even if she had to disappoint someone of her family. It takes a strong willed person to be able to stand up against her family and go after what she believes in, no matter if anyone important to her has different ideas upon the matter. Once Patria realized that the school was no longer suited for her needs, she then returned home to help Papa out with the farm. Patria later married the love of her life, and they had two kids; Noris and Nelson. During this time period it was a blessing from God to be blessed with the presence of another life. Patria was so excited, until she discovered something was wrong with her third child, “And I realized I was giving birth to something that was dead” (52). No mother can ever imagine losing a child. In order to get over the incident and move on with one’s life one has to be able to believe in herself and…

These are just a few of the things Thetis has given to her son. Thetis had helped in the Trojan War even though she wasn’t there. Most people would think how she could help if she didn’t even take a life or destroy Troy. Let me explain how she did have a major impact on the war. When Patroclus was killed in the battle he wore the armor of Achilles. Troy gained access to Patroclus’s body but also Achilles's armor. Achilles, while semi-immortal, could still die if struck through his heel. When Thetis came to comfort her son and found out his armor was broke said, “I will go to Hephaestus, lord of all armorers, and in the morning I will bring you such a shield and helmet and breast-plate as has not been seen by mortal men” (Sutcliff 77). This armor protected Achilles and let him stay in the battle longer while he was still alive and saved him from many possible fatal blows to his heel. Thetis was a loving giving mother to even go to the god of armor to get Achilles armor even when she knew he would…

Mothers are persistent figures throughout “The Odyssey” and are seen as the givers of pity and sorrow rather than true “supporters” of their sons and husbands in terms of military or personal quests. In most instances of depictions of mother figures in “The Odyssey”, these are women in need of support and guidance as they are weak and fragile. Without a steady male hand to guide them, these women appear to be lost and inconsolable. As one scholar notes, “Telemachus first asserted his manhood by ordering Penelope from the public rooms of the palace, indicating to the suitors of his intention to assert his claim to his father’s throne. The dependence of mothers on their son’s devotion to them is made clear elsewhere in Homer, as in the case of Anticlea and her statement that she died not of illness but of longing for her son Odysseus” (Pomeroy 28). The mothers in this text serve little function aside from mourning their men and urging them to remain safe, which is an important notion because much of the…

In the text, "A Quilt of a Country", Anna Quindlen tries to persuade the reader about how U.S.A should be united even though we are such a disparate nation. She talks about the bigotry we see every day and how we set it away when we face tragedies like the 9/11. She wrote this article for the people who live in America, American adults, and political leaders. Letting her inspiration to write this be the attack to the world trade center, 9/11. Writing this text she shows how U.S.A, unlike other nations, has survived as a pluralistic nation, and how we should be united, and let bigotry disappear from our nation.…

During his time in Hades, Odysseus found his mother and discovered the reason for her death, “And so it was me…the reason I perished…it was my longing for you that took the sweet spirit of life from me” (173). In this quote, it shows that when one has family, there is someone that cares for another. Also, family always cares about the person they love, like his mother dies worrying about Odysseus' well being. Another way Odysseus learns the importance of family is when he finds his way home, Odysseus is reunited with his family. Laertes is there with his arms wide open to welcome him home like it says in this quote, “Opening his arms [Odysseus] ran straight to him” (355). This quote goes to show that family will always welcome one home. One can tell that this family really love Odysseus a lot, because his whole family is worried and just can't wait until Odysseus gets home to Ithaka. Odysseus learns that family is very important because they will always be there for one and other through thick and…

This story gives a reflection on the role of the media because it demonstrates how news matter when a catastrophe occurs. Media is there to inform the public and increase their popularity but they are emotionally detached on what Azucena is going through. Allende makes media react in a particular way on how they should act with the people and be in guard on what to film, to please the public. The media only follows the company’s demands which is to bring more money for the company and that they shouldn’t take daily events emotionally. Though there’s Rolf Carle, who is different toward Azucena and distracts her from her hurt and loss of hope.…
