should have such as her loving spirit, devotedness to her child, and her giving nature.
Thetis loves Achilles so much that she'd walk a million miles for him as shown by her actions. She was always protecting him since her mistake in the past. Her mistake was that she dipped him into the Styx and only held his heel making him vulnerable there. "By the time she understood what she had done it was too late, for the thing could not be done again; so ever after she was afraid for her son, always afraid"(Sutcliff 12-13). Thetis also attended Achilles's funeral and sung many songs to mourn.
Most parents' devotedness is show by the love, care, and attention they show their child and always try to support then till the end. Thetis not only did that, but when Achilles cried out for her comfort she came across the sea just for him. She always was there for him when he needed her and she always heeded to his call like a devoted mother should.
Armor, a shield, love, care, and comfort.
These are just a few of the things Thetis has given to her son. Thetis had helped in the Trojan War even though she wasn’t there. Most people would think how she could help if she didn’t even take a life or destroy Troy. Let me explain how she did have a major impact on the war. When Patroclus was killed in the battle he wore the armor of Achilles. Troy gained access to Patroclus’s body but also Achilles's armor. Achilles, while semi-immortal, could still die if struck through his heel. When Thetis came to comfort her son and found out his armor was broke said, “I will go to Hephaestus, lord of all armorers, and in the morning I will bring you such a shield and helmet and breast-plate as has not been seen by mortal men” (Sutcliff 77). This armor protected Achilles and let him stay in the battle longer while he was still alive and saved him from many possible fatal blows to his heel. Thetis was a loving giving mother to even go to the god of armor to get Achilles armor even when she knew he would
die.
Mothers should always be devoted, loving, and giving, but I think Thetis is an amazing mom and a true hero. Zeus, the king of the gods helped the Trojans because of Thetis’s request, another major point in the war that Thetis led. In real life when an actor goes on stage they always have their crew behind them supporting them. And even though they might never be seen the actor is made great by them. Heroes don’t always have to have big names to be heroes and you certainly don’t see Thetis in your list of heroes, but that doesn’t mean she’s not one. However, Thetis is certainly not perfect she could have possibly saved Achilles if she dipped him into the Styx correctly. She also could have prioritized his heel on his armor so he could have been impervious. Still, Thetis was still unknowing that it could only be done once when she dipped him in and was “Always afraid” for him after she understood her mistake. Thetis should not only be recognized for her actions in the war but should be respected more and hailed as a true hero.
