Clinical Reflection: Clinical Skills

Clinical Reflection: Lab Skills Today was not the typical clinical rotation, in fact, we did not even get to go to the clinical site. There was no assessment form to be completed, no vital sign to be documented, nor chart to be investigated, but important nursing skills are needed to be practiced nonetheless. After a long grueling week of tests, deadlines, and mounds of study materials, the clinical serves as an inspiration to focus on what is ahead. I look forward to Thursdays with great anticipation. Anticipation towards the patient care experiences, the nursing challenges, and the reward of making a difference for someone else. Clinical experiences put me one step closer to what I have always wanted to do. Often times I get discouraged
The things learned today may be minuscule compared to the other skill set needed to achieve competency in the nursing field, but each individual skills acquired are every bit important. While it is easy to take for granted the things that does not make as huge an impact as I would want it to be, I can not ignore the fact that they are necessary. The laboratory class was not as exciting nor as challenging as the rigors that the clinical environment demands. There was no sense of hurriedness, no alacrity, nor challenging stressor that keeps the blood flowing through my veins. Needless to say, the skills that I learned and practiced today in the laboratory setting are not any less important compared to those that I do with my patients during clinical. Dealing with mannequins or simulated limbs may be not as challenging as those that I face during the clinical rotation, but the ultimate goal is to gain the knowledge and the experience that would be crucial in performing my role as a nurse.
