"Clothes” by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni 1
“You Canʼt Go Home Again” is a text written by Tariq Ramadans and was published in the newspaper Time the 24th of December 2001. The text deals with immigration and gives the reader insight in the problems there are between Muslims and Europeans. Muslims The article has a simple message: Europeans and Muslims should live in harmony and peace with each other. This shall be done by the Muslims and the Europeans having a better working relationship; the Europeans must respect and tolerate the traditions and life conditions that the Muslims have while the Muslims must do an effort to adapt the culture of the country they live in. Tariq Ramadans is not in doubt that it is both the Muslims and the Europeans who have to work this out and take responsibility. “Itʼs up to Muslims to assume their responsibilities, construct clear arguments, engage in dialogue both within their own communities and with others and reject the simplistic vision of “us vs. them” (p. 2, ll. 5-10) So the Muslims have to participate in dialogues both with other Muslims but also with the Europeans. If the Muslims have the idea of the world being “Muslims vs. Europeans” then we will never get to a point where there is “no immigration” - meaning that the immigration process will be fluent and without troubles. “But their non-Muslim fellow citizens need to make an effort too. They need to accept that Europeʼs population has changed, that it no longer has a single history [...]” (p. 2., ll. 23-27) Ramadans underlines that the immigration is everybody's responsibility with the two quotations. The Europeans needs to understand that our countries has changed and that we are merging histories with other cultures - e.g., Denmark is no longer “the Vikings” but we also have a history which involves Allah. From the above quotes it is seen that Tariq Ramadans does not only speak to Europeans or Muslims. Itʼs for both. It is as if a few lines is written for Muslims, then a few lines for Europeans and so on. Not a

In Europe the poor immigrants, "were useless plants…mowed down by want, hunger, and war. But now with the power of transplantation…they have taken root and flourished!" (290). Europe is just an infertile garden of hate and war but now that a more bountiful garden (America) has been discovered the immigrants can be "transplanted" and flourish and grow to their fullest potential fed by the new hopes, dreams, and opportunities that are appearing to them. Jean de Crèvecoer reinforces his point by posing the question: "What attachment can a poor European emigrant have for a country where he had nothing?" (290). An immigrant can't hope to have any loyalty to a country that has shown him disrespect from the moment he was born, a country that has spat in his face while he begged on the side of the road for a scrap of food, a country that has pushed him in to the mud and trodden on him. He instead must embrace a country that has new opportunities for him, a country where he is respected, and a country where he can get what he has always wanted to have,…

Before 9/11 there was a trend of relatively favorable treatment of immigrants. While creating new laws and legislations, it is important to define the various types of immigration policies to understand the political responses in the US and Europe to different immigration issues. Immigration policy can be divided into two areas: immigration control (ie. Illegal immigration, political asylum, family reunification, and legal labor visas) and immigrant integration (citizenship, anti-discrimination, and language requirements). In other words, one aspect of immigration policy involves controlling migrant flows. This includes border control, which is a crucial component of not only migration flows but also of national security. The second aspect involves the incorporation of immigrants into society. Incorporation is beneficial for security purposes; for example, the integration of immigrants, particularly Muslim immigrants, has gained greater…

The concept of foreign in majority of the cases depends on the ideas and images constructed socially, which reduces the globe to “us”, “them”, “good ones like me”, and “the normal”, the others who are distinctive: a disruption, a threat demonstrating a degradation of appropriate behavior and values. Despite that majority of the individuals consider xenophobia as generally acceptable and in contradiction with the human rights culture; it is not atypical. Discriminations on the basis of xenophobia, for instance acts of violence and verbal abuse, are evidently the violations of human rights (Correa, 2000).…

Immigration is a political issue which reveals the inherent contradiction behind the notion of the liberal democratic nation state. That being the universal promise of human rights, and the exclusive promise of membership to the nation. Nowhere is this clearer than the debate surrounding naturalization and the granting of citizenship to immigrants. Historically in Europe, citizenship has been intrinsically tied to membership of a singular culture or ethnicity, but over the last few decades there has been a general trend of liberalization throughout Europe. However, for the most part naturalization is viewed as a reward granted to the immigrants who show an understanding and appreciation of the civic and cultural norms already in place. The…
