Rich and poor women both wore dress, the rich wore surcoat was originally a large wrapper with sleeves and was thrown over upper part of robe. The surcoat was then made without sleeves later on. The surcoats under garment was made of some costly material which could be seen. Surcoat was many different colors, which were scarlet, blue, and reddish brown or two or more of these colors mixed together. The surcoat was raised higher above the hips and ars holes were made very large allowing the expensive material to be seen. The surcoats often trailed on the ground behind them. On the other hand some couldn't show nothing but their legs. The upper class women seldom showed themselves on the streets.There are many things a women could wear to show themselves. Women worked in apron to protect her garments from soiling (Bleigberg). They patched their garments or remade them in newer styles. Some of the women who don't have a whole lot of money to buy clothes have to wear the same working clothing. Married women only should wear mantle usually observed, but younger girls of the nobility wore in on occasion.
