Summer’s almost over and with the kids going back to school, I started thinking about today’s topic and believe it is one that is important to us all because it has to do with our children’s school system.
Let’s start at the beginning; does everyone remember a post I made about attending the Public Policy Workshop in Washington, DC?
We discussed different bills such as:
1. The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act,
2. The Preventing Diabetes in Medicare Act & 3. The Child Nutrition Programs Reauthorization.
Today I bring to your attention the Child Nutrition Programs Reauthorization (CNR) and will discuss what problems might arise from the changes the Senate and House of Representative want to make to CNR, but most importantly …show more content…
They also plan on implementing a block grant pilot for school meals programs; this capping the number of children receiving free or reduced meals. They plan on removing evidence-based nutrition standards for children’s meals (WHAT!? - I know that’s what I said), and lasting they will eliminate the word “fresh” from the fresh fruit and vegetable program making freshly grown produce less accessible to children in school. What I know.
Having worked in a school I know for a fact that there are many children that come to school hungry and rely on their two cafeteria meals. I’ve had students say that they thought peaches came in a can and have never seen a fresh peach until they had them at school. For many these statements might sound unbelievable, however, this is a reality for many families. Therefore, I am against the changes the House of Representatives suggested making to these programs that have no benefit to our children.
