Conflict Resolution: An Organizational Dilemma
If you were in the supervisors position, how would you have balanced the company’s policy against the employees desire to date? How would you have addressed the topic with the employee in general?
The first I would is to verify that there has been a violation of company policy.
I would set a time to speak with the individuals
My conversation would start with asking about the relationship and its depth.
At this point I would remind the individuals of company policy and the impact that violating that policy has on their further employment.
I would then also let them know of possible troubles that their relation may cause for the company. If the relation is going bad, performance issues and lose time could hinder company business.
These discussions would then be documented and I would do a follow up on the relationship.
If the violation still existed, I would then follow up with policy for continuing the relationship… suspension or termination
What conflict resolution style would you recommend to the supervisor? Explain why.
I believe I would advise the supervisor to use a Consensus Resolution. Basically the company policy would be the consensus resolution. Consensus is reached when the disputing parties fully agree on what the problem really is, participate in a series of brainstorming sessions to generate possible solutions and, finally, reach a single, shared solution for resolving the situation. To me all of this would be the violation of company policy
