Coach Carter Essay
Movies not only serve as a source of entertainment, but they convey a message to its viewers. To convey these messages, movies relate to the viewers lives and touch on their emotions. In the movie Coach Carter, it is evident that this movie is able to communicate deep messages that influence its viewers. After watching an awful game of Richmond versus Saint Francis, Ken Carter, the protagonist, takes up the basketball coaching job at Richmond High School. Being a steadfast man, Coach Carter deals with the disrespectful Richmond basketball team by issuing contracts and imposing harsh consequences when his players are out of line. Through hard discipline, the Richmond Oilers learn the meaning of respect and teamwork. When he first took the job of being coach of the Richmond Oilers, he had a plan in mind. From his perception, he saw that a majority of his players were destined for jail or even death. His paradigm was limited to that his basketball players would only live a life of crime and poverty. As a result of this view, Coach Carter had a plan of just coaching basketball players and teaching boys. However, after the first round against Saint Francis for the state championship, Coach Carter gives a speech to his players after the devastating loss. As his students began to study, he realized his players had become students also. When they started respecting him, his players became men. Therefore, Coach Carter experienced a paradigm shift, which is also a different view on his team. He became aware that not all of his players would live on the streets. Some would go to college and pursue careers in the future. This result gave him a new outlook on his
