Johnson started coaching for girls hockey when it was the program's third year. “One of my big things was to try and get more girls involved in hockey” Johnson said. His goal when he started coaching was to get a girls team for each age level. After eleven years of coaching there was at least one team if not two for each level.
Johnson never thought he would become a girls hockey coach but he is happy he did. What he remembers most from coaching was the relationships with the girls. “A lot of the girls started playing for me as seventh or eighth graders. . . I would have girls for five or six years, watching them grow up, watching them get married, watching them have their own kids,” Johnson said. …show more content…
Throughout the years his teams had their ups and downs, they were put into conferences that they shouldn't have been and played against juniors and seniors when they had eighth and ninth graders.
After coaching girls varsity hockey for eleven years Johnson moved on to refereeing. Coaching put stress on his marriage and he was burnt out of the travel. “Reffing is great because when the game is over you just get to go home, nobody's emailing you, nobody's calling you, nobody’s complaining to you. . . reffing is nice cause I still get that thrill of the moment,” Johnson said.
