Hoosiers is a film about second chances. Redemption is given to a short tempered coach, who was issued a lifetime suspension by the NCAA for physically assaulting a player, and a former star player- turned town drunk. These two defeat their odds by taking a small town high school basketball team from being just 15 and 10, all the way to the state championship. In my review, I’ll attempt to explain how this coach matches up against Kouzes and Posner’s “Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership.”…

Since it’s creation in 1869, football has become a crucial piece to American society. On a typical Friday night in any small town, the sounds of the crowd, the band, and the cheerleaders can be heard from the dimly lit streets: this is the place where a town comes together as a community and becomes one through the hopes and dreams of the players on the field. During his “mid-life crisis,” author and reporter H.G. Bissinger abandoned his life in Pennsylvania and moved to the small on the map town of Odessa, Texas. During his time in the town, Bissinger was able to reveal “America’s small town values” (Denver Post), both good and bad. As he became more familiar with the town, Bissinger was able to develop a story from his introduction to Boobie Miles. Immersing himself into the town of Odessa during the 1988 Permian High School football season, H.G. Bissinger follows the development of Boobie Miles to encompass the moral of the Friday Night Lights in order to reveal the inner workings of the town, the team, and the dream and how Boobie is the essential piece to the development of those themes.…

In a town where it is clear that the only way to achieve any recognition is through football stardom, the importance of education is often misplaced. Families tied to Permians rich football history only try and repossess their ambitions through their children. Parents would rather develop their son’s athletic skills over their intellectual skills as they see it as their only ticket out of town. L.V. Miles, the uncle of the highly touted running back Boobie Miles, has raised Boobie to become the best football star in Permian history, dedicating no importance to his education. Bissinger explores the strong bond Boobie and L.V. share within football, “from the…

In the process of integration, tension amongst individual in school becomes high. This film is a perfect concoction of two elements: a coup of an underdog sports team and a successful assimilation of high school football team in general. The interaction of two coaches, a black and a white, is quite a challenging part. Both Coach Boone and Coach Yoast had struggle to overcome their personal dilemma and worked for the betterment of their team. Although reluctant at first, Yoast accepted the demotion and conspired with Boone to produce a winning team! The sub-story between Gerry Bertier, Titan's white team captain, and Julius Campbell, an aptitude black player is also remarkable. It confirms that strong friendship can be forged despite the racial hatred plaguing the community.…

The great thing about Lombardi was that the values he established and the vision he created were so strong that players could hate him, but still play their hearts out for him. Lombardi empowered his players to act, and whether they liked him or not, they played their hearts out for him. Lombardi understood the importance of influence. Maxwell shows us, “the true measure of leadership is influence; nothing more, nothing less” (Maxwell, 2007).…
