Coal And Renewable Energy
What is the environmental and social impact of using coal to produce electricity?

According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), burning fossil fuels accounted for approximately 67% of the total amount of electricity produced in the United States in 2015. Coal and natural gas lead all electricity production at 33% each and the other 1% came from petroleum.

The way that coal produces electricity is through a process of energy transformations which are completed in coal power plants. In layman's terms, coal is burned to produce heat energy. The heat is used to boil water to form steam where the steam can physically move to spin turbines; a form of kinetic energy. The spinning motion from the turbines drive an electricity generator

In 1980, 42% of energy production came from oil and the figure decreased to 25% in ten years latter. By contrast, the proportion of natural gas used as a source for generating energy, which remained almost stable at 26% in 1980, with 25% in 1990. However, coal experienced a slight decrease from 22% in 1980 to 27% in 1990, which overtook the rate…

Fossil fuels are currently the most widely used source of nonrenewable energy in today’s society. These sources of energy are used to generate power for both commercial and personal use in a number of different ways. “In 2005, more than 3/4 of total world energy consumption was through the use of fossil fuels.” (Environmental Literacy Council, 2008) Oil, the leading energy resource depended upon to fuel everyday functions produces 43.4 % of our world’s energy. Natural Gas, the second most relied upon resource produces 15.6 % of the world’s energy followed by coal, which produces 8.3 % of the world’s energy. Unsurprisingly, North America is the number one consumer of nonrenewable energy resources, consuming approximately 25 % of the fossil fuels extracted from the earth. Coal mining has been around for decades since the 1800s and coal has been powering our lights even till today. The documentary called, "Burning the future: Coal in America" presented a lot of vital information about how the coal industries work and how coal helps the nation stay lit. Countries that build the world 's biggest coal plants are the United States, China and India. The states that practice coal mining are Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Coal power plants emissions contain many elements and compounds including sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxide and other elements including one of the largest sources which are carbon dioxide. With nuclear power came what was thought to be a more clean alternative to burning coal and other fossil fuels; Nuclear power does not produce nearly as much of the greenhouse gases as coal produces. People and society have given nuclear power a bad name, considering the amount of accidents that have happened. Although when you look at statistics it’s not as many as you would believe, or expect. When nuclear power is put head to head with coal power, nuclear power is the more efficient, and the safest way of power production. There are several reasons for this like the amount of fuel burned, pollution levels, and the effect it has on the environment.…

Geothermal energy is a renewable source of energy generated and stored in the Earth. Coal powered energy is a source of energy produced from the natural resources of the Earth. Geothermal energy and coal powered both have many uses especially in generating electricity. In this field, they are similar as electrical energy is generated in a similar concept. Heat from the Earth’s crust and heat produced during the burning of coals are both used to boil water which converts water into the form of steam to turn the turbine and then generate a large amount of electricity.…

Coal was one of man's earliest sources of heat and light. The Chinese were known to have used it more than 3,000 years ago. It was discovered in Britain. The United Kingdom had a large amount of coal, especially in the North West, North East, Southern Scotland and Wales. Coal also helped improve the ability to manufacture iron, a metal needed to make machines and build factories. England traded and sold coal, oil, wood, steel in the markets to get money so they can feed their people.…

The Industrial Revolution was a time of innovation and productivity which truly allowed the British to transition to this new era. The Industrial Revolution in Britain was not caused from an individual power but the need for a better energy source than wood. The British found this in coal which contains three times the amount of energy, and the British coasts were blessed with this resource. Mining was what allowed the Industrial Revolution to kick start. As the coal source on the surface depleted, great minds were needed to drain the inundated coal veins, without these the growth of the British would have dissipated. Trading, provided the British with desirable goods. These goods allowed businesses to obtain bonus capital. Despite this it…

Oil is the largest source of energy in the United States, providing close to 40 percent of all of the nations entire power needs. (Pace University, 2000) Most oil is used for home heating or transportation, but a small amount is used as fuel for electricity producing plants. There are three ways to convert oil into electricity; Conventional steam, combustion turbine, and combined-cycle technology. Each of these methods involves burning the oil, which in turn, pollutes the air, land and water.…
