Coal handling plant in a thermal power generating station coal Hand e ling Mine /Plant in a the rmal p o we r g e ne rating s tatio n

Introduction to Coal handling plant
In a coal based thermal power plant, the initial process in the power generation is “Coal Handling”. So in this article i will discuss the overall processes carried out at a Coal Handling plant in a coal based thermal power generating station. T he huge amount of coal is usually supplied through railways. A railway siding line is taken into the power station and the coal is delivered in the storage yard. T he coal is unloaded f rom the point of delivery by means of wagon tippler. It is rack and pinion type. T he coal is taken f rom the unloading site to dead storage by belt conveyors. T he belt deliver the coal to 0m level to the pent house and f urther moves to transfer point 8. T he transf er points are used to transf er coal to the next belt. T he belt elevates the coal to breaker house. It consists of a rotary machine, which rotates the coal and separates the light dust f rom it through the action of gravity and transf er this dust to reject bin house through belt. T he belt f urther elevates the coal to the transfer point 7 and it reaches the crusher through belt. In the crusher a high-speed 3-phase induction motor is used to crush the coal to a size of 50mm so as to be suitable f or milling system. Coal rises f rom crusher house and reaches the dead storage by passing through transfer point 8.

Equipment used in a coal handling plant
1. Pull chord swit ch
A series of such switches are arranged in series at a 1m distance on the side of conveyor belt. T he power supply to rotor of the conveyor belt is established only if all switches in series are connected.

2. Vibrat ing f eeder
T he coal stored in a huge hub is collected on the belt through vibrations created by the vibrating f eeder.

3. Flap gat es
T hese are used to channelize the route of coal through another belt in case

Power stations that utilize coal need large amounts of fuel. In other words, they not only need truckloads but trainloads of coal on a regular basis to continue operating and generating electricity. This only means that coal-fired power plants should have reserves of coal in a large area near the plants location. The present and…

New York, September 21, 2015 -- The impact of the government’s Clean Air Act has set the stage for the decline of coal and has set in motion a chain of events that could transform coal completely by the end of the next decade. Recent coal demand surveys have also revealed that the coal industry has witnessed almost no increase in demand for nearly 7 years, which could soon translate in a complete seizure of sale and extraction as early as 2030. The devastating economic downturn of 2007 has also had a profound effect on the use of coal, with many western countries no longer considering it to be a feasible source of energy though its use is growing in the developing world.…

    Essay On Coal Mining

The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyor, jacks and shearers (definitions.net). A career in coal mining requires specific skills and training, offers common compensation and benefits, and has an expected career path and opportunity for advancement.…

Coalbed methane, also more commonly known as coal seam gas (CSG) in Australia, is a type of natural gas removed from coal beds. It has been labelled as an unconventional natural gas along with tight gas and shale gas. They are labelled as "unconventional" as a result of their unusual reservoir types. It is removed from coal seams that are 300 - 1000 metres underground, and it is mainly composed of methane gas. It is typically extracted by drilling a steel-encased hole into the coal seam which then lowers the pressure as water is pumped out. This will let the gas flow to the surface. Coal seam gas is said to have originated in Queensland's Bowen Basin in 1976, however there was not much interest or development until the early 1990s. Another reason for more interest in recent times is the advances in technology that allow for more efficient extracting. This energy source is innovative as it helps the world meet its energy needs while being environmentally friendly as it does not emit as much greenhouse gases as other energy sources. It may also be socially and economically positive for Australia as it can create 20,000 jobs and attract $40 billion of investment in the future. CSG is also much more cost efficient then some sources of energy like solar or wind. However, there are also certain risks and potential downsides of extracting coal seam gas.…
