During the Middle ages Knights were a thing of honor that only a select few men could earn the title. Men had to show courage and strength like no other, they also had to be loyal and honorable. In the excerpt Sir Gawin and The Green Knight , translated by Burton Raffel, both Sir Gawin and The Green knight portray chivaly code of the Middle ages through their actions and decesions in order to show their character.
The Code of Chivalry was the honor code of the knight. The Code of Chivalry was an important part of the society and lives of people who lived during the Medieval times and was understood by all. According to the code Sir Gawin shows all these things in Sir Gawin and The Green Knight. He portrays respect by excepting the challenge that the green knight offers him even tho he knows the Green knight gets to do the same challenge to him. Green knight then proceeds to pick up his head and remind him he gets to do the same in a exactly a year.
The code also talks about honor and how a Knight should be a prime example for it. Sir Gawin shows honor by being a night of his word and setting out to find the Green Knight for his end of the challenge and arriving on the day that they agreed to meet. Sir Gawin sets out to find the Green knight on a long, hard, possibly fatal mission. Sir Gawin travels weeks through the cold, and through giant-haunted wilds of north Wales all alone. He comes upon a castle, their he is welcomed by lord of the castle and his lady where he is assured that the Green Knight and his chapel are nearby. Sir Gawin accompanys the lord and his lady for the next 3 days for it is time for chistmas season. Sir Gawin sets back out to find the Green Knight.
The code also states that a knight who follows the Chivaly code should be brave like no other man .
He portrays bravery by standing their and letting the Green Knight do the same challenge that Sir Gawin got to do to him. Sir Gawin arrives at what appears to be “the most cursed chapel ever where the devils of hell could pray their prayers quite well”. It is their that the Green Knight appears to Sir Gawin ready to repay him a deal. It is then that the Green Knight swung his weapon swiftly up, then down to the bare flesh where it struck Sir Gawin hard but hurt him only with a nick. Then the Green Knight procedded to tell Sir Gawin how honorable and brave he was for coming to meet him at his chapel for a deal made over a year
