Gaylord was the first offical dormitory that was founded in 1884 (Perry et al. 54). Like other dorm rooms it was heated by steam (wood stoves) and had gas lighting (Perry et al 55 and 56). This shows how food was very scarce in 1800-1900’s. During this time the women had to go to the spring three hundred feet from each building for drinking water, but In Gaylord, cistern water is piped to every floor in ladies’ hall (Perry et al. 55). Water was hard to get as Crete had no water system (Perry et al. 55). Gaylord had many rooms. This dormitory had 42 rooms that housed 75-80 students (Perry et al. 56). This hall was different because the women teachers also reside (Perry et al. 57). I would not like my teachers being my RA in college. Reverend…
Statistics have changed over the years, showing that now more women apply to college and stick with it. In the early days of coeducation the ratio of men and women on campus revealed that more men were attending college. Men nowadays don’t even apply for college, and the ones that do apply don’t stay long or they do poorly in school (909).…
Dahl, builds a sense of foreboding in this story about a man named Billy on an innocent business trip and an old Landlady running a "Bed & Breakfast". The story in the beginning makes the Landlady seem creepy, but the story also makes the Landlady seem so nice. Through out the story she drops hints about how scary she really is. At the end of the story it all comes together, and we realized that this lady truly isn't harmless.…
After reading the essay “The Cohabitation Epidemic” I do not believe the author (Neal Clack Warren) made a good case for his conclusion stating that we should be alarmed over the recent epidemic of cohabiting couples. When I first read the essay I wasn’t actually too sure that was the conclusion. So much time was spent arguing over the position that cohabiting with a partner is not a good form of a trail marriage, that it was lost in the mix to me. After rereading and breaking it down I tried to take a closer look and see if the premises lead to the conclusion.…
On April 11th, 1968, president Lyndon Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The act’s purpose was to eliminate discrimination during the sale, rental, and financing of a house based on someone’s race, religion, national origin, and gender. This bill difficulty passing as from 1966-67 congress regularly considered a bill similar to this but failed to because of lack of support. However, when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, president Lyndon Johnson thought a way to commemorate his death was to quickly sign a bill regarding unfair housing because of discrimination. In addition, another issue that caused this bill to be signed was the amount of families of war heroes in Vietnam who could not purchase a home because of their race.…
As a group, we challenged group bias by discussing the homeless research we had previously encountered. We had all came across viral internet videos of homeless people who were just in the business of loitering and collecting free money for drugs or other unhealthy activities. We became hesitant and unsure if we wanted to help the homeless community because of the negative stereotype. But, Chris brought up a very strong point he said “Well at the end of the day it doesn't matter because no human being deserves to be out in the cold without proper layering. We just will choose not give money instead give them resources that will make a difference in the long term”…
Having a roommate can be an unpleasant experience. Everybody is conditioned differently. Each person has their own way of running a household. Having to learn everyone's disposition can be a challenge because of differences. I have found it quite difficult to live with other people because they tend to not want to pick up after themselves, they have no regard for your feelings, and they could care less about your personal belongings. I have categorized the roommates that I have lived with into three categories: the dirty, the disrespectful, and the hazardous.…
Homeless shelters provide assistance for men, women, and children in the United States. The primary demand for homeless services is a constant need. Homeless shelters provide the population of homeless individuals comfort in knowing that there is a place they may go to in their time of need. There are many homeless shelters that cater to different criteria's. Many homeless shelters provide meals[->0], clothing, counseling, and job skills. Before understanding the link between Residential Schools and child welfare, it is imperative to understand the horrible memories these Aboriginal young children have. The average Aboriginal child taken away from their family was only 7 years old. You arrived at the schools being told you are no longer an Indian. Assault began the moment the child took the first step across the school’s threshold, having their clothing stripped off and all hair shaved off. Many children were crushed with loneliness from the minute they arrived, being segregated from others. Even though these were schools, the expectations were not high what so ever. Attracting good teachers was a reoccurring problem due to the fact that they had very productive days beginning at 6:45, ended at…

At a young age, I experienced family members who were alcoholics. I saw how alcohol turned them into different people and as I walked through college parties, I noticed how alcohol was changing these students’ lives. Some of these students I saw stumbling drunk didn’t even look like kids who would even put a cup of beer or liquor up to their mouth and it was slowly ruining their lives. I believe alcohol should be banned from colleges because of all of the negative effects that may occur, which is something I have experienced in my life.…
