In the working world today there may be some who believe that common sense and compassion in the workplace leave no need for litigation. Some may feel as if morale is all that is needed to protect employers and employees of organizations. This is not the case by far. Although it is expected for employees in most environments to have compassion, common sense, and morale, not all employees turn out to be who they were expected to be. Litigation does replace common sense and compassion in the working world today. This is why regulations have been put in place by the U.S. Department of Labor, The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The way the social worker can assist others is by helping them assets their own biases for any particular group and making them be aware about them. I think cognitive dissonance is extremely common in our lives, whether we realize it or not. Almost every day I can say that I am faced with cognitive dissonance. For example I’m on a diet and I know I should not be eating sweets, but when I come by one, even though I’m telling myself in the moment I shouldn't be doing this, I eat the sweets anyway. Shortly before or after eating it I will try to justify in my mind why I just did that or why it was ok. Something like “oh it was just one; as long as I don't keep doing it I’ll be ok.” Just telling myself this in my head is enough sometimes to continue with my actions even though I know I’m contradicting myself.…
A person who calls in sick even though he or she are not has subsequent behavior, which is a onetime deal. The behavior can be something that continues every other month. A person who plans on calling in sick will prepare for it in a few days and the day before they call in the symptoms may start to occur like if they have the flu. People will do research to see what symptoms should be starting to occur on the day before calling in sick. The thought is that way they do not look suspicious. When he or she calls in sick, he or she should stay away from any sort of social outlet like Facebook. They should also call the boss early in the am because a person’s voice is rough and scratchy. Fear has a component of biological traits and genes but there are also many environmental experiences that impact what you are afraid of as an adult. As children we are taught that making a mistake is wrong and many times we get punished for simple errors that are no big deal. We are all afraid of failure but there people that are just too afraid, this is a consequence of bad treatment during childhood. The best way to overcome fear is by being confident in what you are afraid of. For example if you are afraid of making an embarrassing mistake while presenting in front of a class then practice it in front of your family or a group of people you feel comfortable with until you’re confident with what you are saying.…
Social Work research can affect the validity and how reliable research findings are, which affects the outcome of research hypothesis. My personal biases came in the form of opinion that I had regarding Individuals and families on the Welfare which I was unaware of before I started my MASS program. I had the notion that everyone on the Welfare were lazy, refused to work because they enjoy collecting free benefits from the government. A situation where I had an ethical conflict with a client is when there was a client who wanted to have an abortion. I was completing a house visit with an assigned social worker and I had to conduct the meeting. The client felt that she did not want a baby due to her age. I do not believe in abortion unless it is caught early on due to a form of sexual assault. However, I could not enforce my beliefs on the client. I had to rightfully inform the client of her options and what the decision could entail. When I explained the options to the client I did so because it was her choice to make. I assisted her and wanted to do so unbiasedly because I wanted the client to make the decision that would long-termly benefit her in the best possible way.
