Coke And Mentos Experiment
When you combine Diet Coke and Mentos, you get an explosive result. The Diet Coke shoots out of the bottle like a miniature sticky geyser. This reaction is so powerful that it could actually propel a rocket, but what is the science behind this geyser-creating reaction? (Hiskey)
This reaction is caused by the ingredients in the Mentos and Diet Coke. The structure of the Mentos allow carbon dioxide bubbles to form extremely rapidly. When this happens, you get the physical reaction of the coke exploding out of the bottle. Other carbonated drinks also work with this experiment. (Hiskey)
One thing that contribute to this explosion is the structure of the Mentos. Mentos are fairly dense and sink rapidly, quickly creating bubbles that seed further

A meter stick was suspended directly above the rim of a 2 liter Diet Coke bottle. This was so we could measure the spray (in inches) once the Mentos were dropped into the soda. We constructed a paper funnel to drop the Mentos into, in order to make sure all the drops were uniform and that all the Mentos went in. We dropped the Mentos into the cola and, while filming the reaction, measure the spray height, using the meter stick. We started with 2 mentos, and then increased it to 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.…

Have you ever wondered if the sugar content in Coke and Pepsi has altered you or your friends preference? In this experiment, we tested to see if the sugar content changes peoples preference over Coke and Pepsi. We chose this experiment because we would like to see how people change their opinions of their favorite soda, after we have informed them of the sugar content. This experiment of Coke vs Pepsi is tied into chemistry by the percentage of the compound/sugar in each can of soda.…

The soda contain sweeteners (sugar or artificial sweeteners) flavoring, water and preservatives. Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is added to the soda trough a high pressure process that causes the gas to dissolve into the liquid, when the soda is opened the gas is relieved and the dissolved gas escapes. In soda, the water molecules cling together around the carbon dioxide gas bubble, when the mentos dropped into the soda, the gum arabic in the coating of the mentos weakens the attractions of the water molecules around the CO2 bubbles. As soon the mentos hit the soda, the carbon dioxide forms more bubble in the tiny pores that are all mentos surface. Couple this with the speed at which mentos are sinking to the bottom of the bottle and an eruptive blast occurs as the CO2 is released and breaks free taking much of the liquid with it.…

The reaction you will be investigating is the reaction that occurs when an Alka-Seltzer tablet is placed into a given amount of water. Alka-Seltzer is an over-the-counter antacid and pain relief medication that is dissolved in water before it is ingested. Each tablet contains aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), citric acid, and sodium bicarbonate. As the tablet dissolves in water, the bicarbonate ions in the tablet react with the hydrogen ions from the acids that are also contained in the tablet. The carbon dioxide gas produced by the reaction is what causes the bubbling that can be observed.…

The purpose of this experiment is to determine if the scientist can conclude in which temperature of water an Alka-Seltzer tablet has the fastest reaction time. The scientist will measure the time of reaction in temperature of water several times to come to an accurate conclusion. “With an Alka-Seltzer tablet, the CO2 is produced as result of a chemical reaction” (Spangler, 2010). The chemical reaction that occurs when the tablet interacts with a substance is known as effervescence. This process produces immediately creates bubbles or “fizzes” and is the product of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and citric acid reacting to form sodium citrate and carbon dioxide gas; which is the main reaction that is known by alka-seltzer tablets. (Chemistry of Effervescence, 2008).…

What you see when mentos are put into diet coke is that the coke spews out of it’s container once contacted with the mentos. But have you ever wondered why this reaction occurs? Well, a carbonated beverage is full of the gas carbon dioxide, and carbon dioxide forms bonds with water. The gas is kept in place in the bottle of soda because of the bottle’s pressurized conditions. This is why soda fizzes when it’s being poured into a cup. The gas is being released, and forms foam. Most of the carbon dioxide stays trapped though, due to the surface tension of the water. For the…

The candy is made by mixing its ingredients and heating them until they melt into dust, then exposing the mixture to pressurized carbon dioxide gas at about 600 pounds per square inch, and allowing it to cool. The process causes tiny high pressure bubbles to be trapped inside the candy. When you put Pop Rocks in your mouth, your saliva dissolves the candy, releasing the carbon dioxide from the tiny atmosphere bubbles, resulting in a popping and sizzling sound and leaving a slight tingling sensation. If you examine…
