Novel Notes: Cold Mountain

Frazier, Charles. Cold Mountain. New York: Atlantic Monthly, 1997. Charles Frazier is 62 (1951-present) years old and the novel was written in the late 90’s. The novel is set during the Civil War.
Key Quotation: “And then she thought that you went on living one day after another, and in time you were somebody else, your previous self only like a close relative, a sister or brother, with whom you shared a past. But a different person, a separate life” (335). Ada thinks this in the Cherokee village on Cold Mountain after she has just reunited with Inman and she begins to think about how she is less beautiful than the last time he saw her. She is a girl that came to Ada to help her on the farm and her and Ada become good friends. She is uneducated, practical, hardworking and at one with the natural world. “’Number one,’ the girl said, ‘if you’ve got a horse I can plow all day. Number two, Old Lady Swanger told me your straits. Something for you to keep in mind would be that every man worth hiring is off and gone’” (51). This quote is when Ruby first meets Ada and she is trying to convince Ada that she’s just as good of a worker as any man. A significant incidence involving Ruby is when she tests Ada on how well she knows her own farm by seeing if she can tell what kind of a tree is rustling by the sound of its leaves. This simple act opens up Ada’s eyes to everything she doesn’t know and gives her more initiative to learn. Ruby’s impact on the book as a whole is as a foil for Ada. Ruby is a practical girl with focus and goals based in reality which is in sharp contrast to the dreamy, intellectual Ada. A minor character that plays a role in the novel is Veasey. He is a low life preacher that Inman meets on the road. He serves as a foil for Inman because while Inman doesn’t believe in God anymore and isn’t spiritual he still maintains a strict moral code; Veasey is exactly the opposite, with no respect for ethics and morals even though he possesses a strong faith in
