The past fifty years in Colombia have been dominated by the struggle between the government and an organization named Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) or better known as the FARC. Founded in 1964 the FARC was created as a military wing of the Colombian Communist Party to overthrow the government and prevent them from industrializing Colombia (“Revolutionary”). The Colombian government planned to industrialize the country and rebuild them after a bloody civil war that had just ended called La Violencia(“Profile”).La Violencia was a civil war, fought mainly in the rural parts between the liberal and conservative parties. Nigaragua is a neighboring country of Colombia with a large dispute. The two countries are still in the midst of a territorial dispute over part of the western Caribbean. Both want the same stretch of water that the other wants and the battle is continually violent. According to Latino Fox News, the International Court Justice at The Hague ruled that Colombia has the right to 3 regional islands, while Nicaragua has the right to a 120-kilometer expanse of oil-rich ocean. Colombia is still fighting for this land that they believe is rightfully theirs (Noto). Colombia also has an ally within the United States. Colombia has been one of the main recipients of the US’ military force, due to the FARC and drug violence within. An anti-drug agreement was constituted between the United States government and the Colombian government to help reduce drug trafficking, add additional forces to Colombia’s military and increase security measures. Although the United States government is doing all that it can to reduce drugs and violence, Plan Colombia has been inadequate in reducing the gaping number of cartels within Colombia. The traffickers relocate everything when they feel threatened, this is known as the “balloon effect.” Many of these narcotics traffickers move into the countries bordering on Colombia, bringing guns, violence and drugs into those countries (Romo). *******.
