“I hardly know whether it was the analogies or the differences that were uppermost in the mind of a young American who, two or three years ago, sat in the garden of the 'Trois Couronnes,' looking about him, rather idly, at some of the graceful objects I have mentioned” (354).…

Boom! The sound snaps us all to life, ensnaring our senses and shaking every fiber of our beings. In less than ten seconds we're all on our feet and almost in complete chaos. I snatch up my gun and the first few of us rush out of the barracks to find the colonel for orders. Boom! This time the blast is right behind us and our barracks bursts into a roaring wall of flames. The blast sends us falling face first to the ground. All of our fellow soldiers, our friends, were still inside and now the building is crumbling in a massive inferno. "We have to move!" Chris says, leaping to his feet, and the three of us run through camp and locate the colonel. "Grab a gun and form up on the coast line. We don't need to fight on two fronts." He orders us.…
Lois Simmie the author of "The Secret Lives Of Sgt. John Wilson" is a true story based on actual events as they occur. Lois Simmie states "Although great care was taken not to attribute to the characters suggestive thoughts or dialogue unless substantiated by evidence, in many cases thoughts and speech are based on what I believe would be natural in the situation". The book is enjoyable to read and the evidence that she supplies is very compelling. By reading this book it also shows Lois Simmie's writing style, and felt more detail about the murder would have greatly increased the books overall flow. As a reader some questions will remain, like how would Lois Simmie suspect that John Wilson would have any remorse for killing Polly? Human nature is anything but predictable, so that conclusion seems to be suggestive.…
The fog was at its worst today. Sometime between the Shock Stop and the showers, I remember fogging up, and fading out. After the fog had cleared, I found myself in the dayroom. I tried to remember whether I was brought to Seclusion or the shaving room. I concluded that I was put into Seclusion, but that I did not have breakfast. As I attempted to recall what happened this morning, I felt a sudden jerk in the gears. Then he came in. He was unlike any of the admissions here. He came in, refusing to shower. He states that he willingly came to the Combine to find new blood for his gambling. His grin, wall to wall, surrounded the Combine, and his laugh was an actual laugh, never before heard on the Inside. Either the Big Nurse, or the Black Boys did anything. The redheaded man wore a devilish grin, a dirty hat, and raggedy old work farm clothes.…
The minister's health is fading. I fear that if I do not find a solution to his ailment soon that he may die, leaving me without a meaningful patient. Maybe it is Hester Prynne that is the problem. She is the evil influence that is taking the last little bit of life he has left. I am ashamed to think that I was even minutely involved with her many years ago. I used to be a good man but our terrible marriage corrupted me. All I have left is Mr. Dimmesdale. I have made him a concoction using plants I found on tombstones. I hope that these plants, which have grown from buried human hearts will have an effect on him. If he dies then I will no longer have a patient to perform experiments on so I will have to slow my medical research until I find another ailing individual. It will be hard to find another individual with such a strong heart and a similar aura to the pastor. Also, a victim with enough assets to pay for my expenses. He knows that I have profited from his ailments and his weak frame. I do not see the Pastor's recovery as a likely scenario. I see that he is heading to his grave so I need to take as much energy from him before he passes on. Maybe it is the demon child Pearl that is causing his imminent death. She has her own sickness which I tried to cure previously, but was unable. The deep rooted evil in the child is something even the most skilled physician cannot remove with any medicine. You can see the malevolent spirit in her eyes. I wonder if the father of this child is the devil himself. Hester is too ashamed to name her father even years after the incident. One day I will find out how this child came to be. Perhaps I will go out again to the forest tonight and perform a ritual to try to find out the true father. I must find out soon, I am getting to be an old man and I fear my time in this town is limited if I cannot find another host. I shall take the pastor for a walk on the beach tomorrow while I…
When someone thinks of a mature person some qualities that might come to mind are honesty, humility, and respect. Unfortunately they are traits that not everyone poses and some may never poses. In the beginning of the novel Henry is a whiney, unrealistic teenager. However overtime he starts to develop some traits that lead to him acting more mature, and adult-like in the environment he is in. In The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, Henry goes from being an immature teenager to demonstrating traits of an adult and reevaluates his own personal values of wanting the fame and glory of being a soldier, and also his value of taking responsibility for his actions.…
I have gone through a lot of things in my life. Many people would not believe so, as I am a pretty blessed child with my father the king, my mother the queen, and me of course, the prince. My life really started to go downhill when my father passed away. Wait, he did not just “pass away”, he got murdered. By my uncle. Why you may ask? Well I’m not too sure. It probably had to do with the fact that now, after two months, my mother married him. He wanted the throne and to rule the town. I wanted revenge, and that is all I wanted. I started seeing ghosts and that started frightening me. I thought I was going insane. The ghost, who ended up being my father, told me to kill my uncle, to get the revenge I strived for. But I couldn’t. I wanted to be very cautious. I wasn’t really that type of person that goes around murdering people! Eventually I started to be abusive to my mother. I really regret that. But I was so mad at her for getting married to the one that killed her own husband! At this point, I accidently murdered my girlfriend’s dad, thinking that it was my disgusting brother. I realized that I was now the murderer that I never wanted to be. Her brother, of course got mad, and my uncle tried to convince him to kill me! We fought, and I thought it would be the winner. Little did I know, my uncles sword was laced with poison, and if it touched me, I’d die. I…
Mistreatment, racism, discrimination, these are some of the actions brought on by misperception of a certain group of people. Due to being blinded by lies, propaganda and false accusation, people easily succumb the manipulation of the upper class. The play “Incident at Vichy”, by Arthur Millar, illuminates the subject of racism, discrimination, dehumanization, knowledge, hatred, deception and sacrifice through the use of Marxism theory by presenting how the upper class has power to influence and control the lower class. In the play “Incident at Vichy” by Arthur Miller, a certain ethnic group of people are heavily discriminated against. This is because the government was able to manipulate society to misperceive these groups of people, eventually leading to their downfall. In the play “Incident at Vichy” Arthur Miller shows, how a man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the betterment of other community. Today we have knowledge about the world but during the time of World War 2, common people had least knowledge, so to pass on the knowledge and to make people realize about the sufferings of some ethnic groups, some people had to step up and sacrifice. This is a unique play, where a Christian prince who is also considered as lower class, sacrifices his own freedom for the freedom of a Jew. He does this to make people realize about the Nazi’s ruthless behavior against some ethnic groups.…

Here we are once again. Once a year around Memorial Day weekend, my mother tries her best to put a dinner together for our big, country family. Every year is a disaster. I thought laughter and food (especially food) would make our family put our differences to the side and come together as a family. Last year, two of my optimistic aunties battled it out over who made the best chicken spaghetti. Let me tell you, that did not end well.…
A sudden tapping of high heeled shoes from the corridor awakens me from my day dreaming. I look up. My pulse quickens, and my hands sweat. I swallow the lump in my throat that has accumulated somehow. Blood is pounding through my head, but even that cannot block out the dreaded words that I hear next; “Barron, Cissie, Doctor Lush will see you…
In consideration of the title to the poem “Mr. Flood’s Party” it may suggest to readers there is a celebration involving guests. When in actuality that is not what occurs, therefore the title is a clever play on words as Robinson clearly illustrates a man who is alone with his time on earth nearing an end, yet he spends that time in a drunken stupor engulfed in his own pity party (43). Naturally, time is constantly ticking and how we chose to live our lives may result in our happiness. Throughout the poem I recognize Mr. Flood is alone, there are many references mentioned that prove this, however, I propose the following support to be powerful examples of that. First, Robinson refers to the road, Mr. Flood lives on as belonging to him (43).…
As the day got longer I started to feel a gut ache coming on from eating those ghastly turnips, all I could think of to get rid of it was a slug of whisky. I knew it was unlikely someone would have a drop but it was still worth a try. I heard the galloping noise of men coming back on the horses. Once they had been back for a while and showered or whatever they do these days, I went into the bunk house and asked Slim if he had any whiskey but, sadly he didn’t.…
There were many changes occurring during the Renaissance in England, but one the most important shift was the hierarchy within the society and the way people perceived god. When we look closely at the reign of Queen Elisabeth and her way to express herself to her citizens and using god to convince her population that by joining her they will take the right course of action, the monarch breaks away from the beliefs held during the middle ages. The middle ages had strong values for god and Hierarchy, they believed that god’s name should not be used in vain and those of royal blood and heavenly creatures are supposed to be superior to the common person in a way or another. Elisabeth, however, in her speech demonstrates to her nation that she considers…
