The 19th century was one of the most important time periods that helped shape the world into what it is today. Western European powers, such as Great Britain, Germany, and France, strongly believed in the notion that in order to gain more dominant global power, they would have to conquer new lands across the globe and exploit the territories’ resources. Throughout the early and mid 1800s, the nations of Western Europe upheld imperialism, conquering and exploiting foreign lands in Asia and South America. Unfortunately, one major problem remained in the way of global imperialism; Africa, a continent rich in resources, could not be infiltrated because of strong resistance by the natives, foreign disease, and difficult terrain. Nevertheless, in the 1880s, Western Europe became more advanced and had the capability of conquering Africa; the scramble for Africa was on. In 1884-85, the Berlin Conference was held in Germany; this was a diplomatic meeting where the nations of Western Europe divided Africa among themselves. Each nation was given separate holdings in Africa, and the issue of land in Africa was solved. However, a major problem overlooked by the Europeans was that Africa had no say in the Berlin Conference. This resulted in many problems that would terrorize Africa for years to come; because Africans had no say in the dividing of their land, religious and political strife arose, and places such as the Congo faced detrimental and uninvited changes.…

Great Britain’s imperialist rule on the colonies had a negative effect. According to Document 7, the colonial rule Britain had over India was economically unfair. The higher positions were reserved for the English and the Indians were kept in a “state of slavery”. According to Document 8, British colonialism in Africa was horrible. There was a social disadvantage because of discrimination and racial segregation. An economic disadvantage was that there were not enough water supplies and the education was limited to the privileged.…

For examplocument 1, “The Map of Africa by Treaty” by Sir. Edward Hertslet, it shows how the continent of Africa was divided and occupied by many different countries. These countries include Germany, France and England. The map also depicts independent states. There are few independent states whereas the major countries occupy Africa. Another economic loss of the african imperialism was the economy. Churches would send missionaries to Africa and take photos of the people before and after the natives were “civilized”. To the occupying countries, civilizing the natives was converting them into christianity and introducing them to western ways. The missionaries would attract tourism and donations when showing photos of the natives westernized. For example, Document 3, “Images of Colonial Africa”, These two photos show Kenyans before and after colonization. Before colonization, the Kenyan family depicted in the photo were wearing traditional kenyan clothes as well as standing in front of their mud hut home. The after colonization photo displays a family in westernized clothing in front of a christian church. These photos attracted people from all over to donate to the churches so they could go back to Africa and convert the natives, ruining another…

Starting in 1895, Kenya started to be conquered mainly by the British. Kenya before Imperialism was made up of tribes, causing the country to not have a government. In 1895, The British East African Protectorate, a colony of British people, started to colonize in Africa and create their own country. Some imperial powers brought positive influences to certain countries, while others brought negative influences to the country. The British brought both positive and negative effects on the country. They brought positive short term effects like infrastructure and stopped fighting between tribes which affected Kenya socially. They also brought a positive long term effect, the idea of a government, but also left the country unstable politically, economically socially and environmentally. Through these effects Britian has shaped the way Kenya is now.…

Europe viewed Africa’s land as a great opportunity to expand. They viewed Africa as insecure and easy to take over as they migrated into any areas with no remorse for their lives. They took rightfully owned land by the Africans and made it their own unrightfully which ultimately lead to the decline of Africa socially, politically and economically. Africa socially before imperialism was very diverse and well constructed.…

There’s no question that European presence in Kenya affected its citizens to a whole different level. Today, Kenya still behaves like a western country, where 82.6% of the population follows Christianity. Whenever a place becomes colonized and then gets independence, it usually keeps its influence from the parent country, for example most of the Americas and Caribbean still carry on the Spanish language and practice Catholicism like the Spaniards. Whether or not colonization causes positive overall change, a sure fact is that it causes insurmountable change to the…

In the late 1800 European countries came into Africa and colonized the land. The English colonized Kenya. It had many effects on Kenya, good and bad, but the bad outweighed the good. Colonialism affected Kenya badly. It was affected badly because the Kenyans were appointed new leaders that didn’t really care about them and the Europeans didn’t treat them equally and they basically took over their land as if the Kenyans weren’t even there. They also didn’t get paid much and they didn’t get as much education as the Europeans.…
