“She aint fresh tho, but I spect you know that. She spoiled. Twice. But you don’t need a fresh women no how. I got a fresh one in there myself and she sick all the time. He spit, over the railing. The children git on her nerve, she not much of a cook. And she big already. Mr.____ he don’t say nothing. I stop crying I’m so surprise.
She ugly. He say.” (Page. 7-8)
Pa describes Celie to persuade Mr.____ into marry her instead but he can only say how unattractive she are. He refer that she’s not good for nothing accept for working. Celie starts to lose self-esteem from Pa words and soon believes every word. Another example of Celie feeling unattractive is her and Shug are expressing themselves. She quoted:
“She say, I love you, Miss Celie. And then she haul off and kiss me on the mouth. Um, she say, like she surprise. I kiss her back, say, um, too. Us kiss and kiss till us can’t hardly kiss no more. Then us touch each other. I don’t know nothing bout it, I say to Shug. I don’t know much, she say. Then I feels something real soft and wet on my breast, feel like one of my little lost babies mouth. Way after a while, I act like a little lost baby too.” (page. 47)
Celie thinks that all men are unattractive to her by what she experienced so she stop looking at men. She meets Shug and later make love and now she feels she can love again but to the same sex gender. The comfort of being loved reminds her of a baby how they get loved and cherished. Shug later moves on, meets a men and Celie is uncomfortable with her decision and feels she can’t love no one else and no one will love her other then shug.
