The Admiral's Letter
Columbus once said “For the execution of the voyage to the Indies, I did not make use of intelligence, mathematics or maps.” simply saying that he used his mind to find his trip rather then doing the math behind it to find the correct coordinates so he sailed to sail he didn't necessarily know where he would dock his ship. The way that this quote would relate to the current day and age would be that we still have pirates that sail without using math and just sail the waters to raid ships or just do it to travel in general. He states in his letter that it has “Fertile land”(1) so this would help the queen and king if they were to conquer it as they could grow large amounts of crops. Columbus also commented on the Lay of the land and the variety of the plants that it had to show. Such as when he said “They are full of trees of great variety, which brush at the stars”(1) Which talks about the height of the trees and the amount of the trees that reside on the island. The lay of the land that he talks about is the mountains and rivers that the island has to offer which comes at a variety as well considering he said “ Very lofty mountains” and “Wholesome rivers flow” (1) having these things would also help him incase of a combat situation because it provided coverage in many situations. Columbus used words such as “Beautiful Trinkets”(2) “Keenest Wit”(2) and “Extremely Fruitful fields”(2). Where he is saying “Beautiful Trinkets” he talks about what the sailors have including but not limited to the homemade things they have made or some of the items they found out on their journeys. Or where columbus uses “Extremely Fruitful fields” he talks about what the people have done with some of their land by growing large amounts of plantlife and crops to support their needs. The Admiral also says that this island supports some of the keenest witted men he has every seen saying that they are a type of greater intellect. With the tone that he presents in his writing it shows that he was proud of his discovery and wasn't discouraged by it or
