The Search for an Alternative Fuel to Save the Environment… And Our Pockets.
Long gone are the days were one could drive into a petrol station and fuel up your highly inefficient gas guzzling vehicle without a care for the environment and sustainability.
The recent spike in the price at the bowser, damage to the environment and diminishing reserves has made it clear that a new, sustainable and clean fuel must be created in order for our vehicles and economy to operate. A promising alternative is a fuel known as “P-Series Fuels.”
What are P-Series Fuels?
P-Series is a type of renewable fuel which contains no petroleum. It can effectively substitute for gasoline. The mixture is made from 35% liquid by-products (also known as C5+ or Pentanes Plus) which are left over when natural gas is processed. 45% of the mixture comes from ethanol, which is made from an array of plants, such as corn and sugar cane, and the final 20% of the mixture is Methyltetrahydrofuran. Methyltetrahydrofuran is an organic compound with the molecular formula CH3C4H7O, it is derived from furfural and lignocellulose biomass such as paper sludge, wastepaper, food waste, yard and wood waste, agricultural waste, and so on.
Problems with Gasoline
The most obvious problem with using fossil fuels is that they’re a finite resource. 1,350,000,000L of fuel is used every day, throughout the world. Petroleum is used for making plastics, medicine, fertilizers and pesticides, paint, synthetic rubber and fibres and clothing. These are all things that we rely on every day. At the current rate that fossil fuels are being used and extracted, we could run out of oil in 50 years. We need to conserve what fuels we have left and stop using them in our cars.
Another big problem with burning fossil fuels, especially gasoline, is the damage it causes to the environment. Combustion of fuels in cars has been identified as the largest contributor to air pollution in the world.
