Percy Grainger was a prolific composer and pianist in the 20th century. He is especially well known for his masterful compositions and pioneering for the literature of the wind band. Grainger’s works have taken on a variety of compositional approaches across a wide range of genres. His scorings, particularly for wind band, have been described as having “a rich sonority and color which compares favorably with any celebrated example of brilliant orchestration.”1 A majority of his works, specifically his wind band works, are characterized by their inclusion of folk song melodies as source material. Within his catalog of wind band compositions, Lincolnshire Posy stands out as a masterwork in the genre. While Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy…
The song Battle Hymn of the Republic was written during the war and its about the war. For over 138 years this song has been featured in patriotic programs and is still sung and schools and churches across the nation. In the early days of the war the song “john brown” was very popular. Although in its original incarnation it had nothing to do with notorious abolitionist leader hanged. Mrs. howe lyrics first appeared on the front page of the atlantic monthly in february of 1862. Editor James T. fields, who paid her $5 for the piece, is credited with having given the song the name it is known today. After the war, Mrs. Howe was active in women's suffrage movement. In 1868, she founded the new england women's club and was one of the founders of…
The identity of the unknown substance two was determined by three tests: solubility, thin chromatography, and the melting point. The following data was concluded based on solubility in water, isopropanol, and methanol: Aspirin was insoluble in both water and isopropanol and soluble in methanol. The unknown substance was insoluble for both water and isopropanol and soluble in methanol. In contrast, Acetaminophen was soluble in all three solutions and Diphenhydramine was soluble in water and methanol, but not isopropanol. Following the thin chromatography test, the Rf was found to be 0.64 cm.…
The in class concert with three performances that I attended on 15th of February was an very interesting experience for me as I have not been to a classical music concerts that often. The first piece, Oxycotton, was performed by Tim Sanchez using the marimba. The second one, Acht Stucke, was performed by Samantha Post using the flute. Nicholas Gledhill using the horn performed the third piece, Blues and Variations for Monk. The last piece, Misty, was performed by CSU Graduate Brass Quintet. In this paper, I am going to write about the performances that I heard and about the different music elements that they used in each performance.…
I enjoy listening to this song anyways as it is in my native language and one of my top childhood songs. The song is about a couple who is in love with each other but when the guy has to leave for the US, they broke up. He later returns and the love is still there. This is a very cute story and I love singing the lyrics that describes his feelings for her as he was away. If I broke up and get back together with my boyfriend, I would want this to be our scenario, that we broke up and got back together because of distance or circumstances, not because we wanted this. I also love how there are english lyrics sung with deep emotion in the song: “I will be back for you.” The music video for the song is also very heartwarming and brings a smile to my face whenever I think of it. If I got back together with my ex, I could listen to this song to remind me of my feelings for him. This song is a great song that evokes strong emotions from me and makes me think about love and how strong it is to overcome lots.…

To introduce the piece two cadenzas inspired by the same melody are performed over a continuous subtle harmony. The piece begins with sustained chords between the string instruments and wind instruments. This gives a relaxed effortless tone to the piece and resembles the calmness and tranquillity of a spring day in England. The violin then enters imitating the lark. The violin plays an ascending pattern with elongated arpeggios. The chords underneath drop out so the violin plays a solo introducing the first theme. The orchestra is quietly introduced and develops the almost folk like motif. A folk dance theme is then introduced led by the clarinet and flute and woodwinds as the solo cadenza is repeated. The full orchestra then comes in however it is still fairly restrained to imitate the English countryside. There is antiphonal exchange between the solo violin playing a trill and then the woodwinds imitating the bird like call. This is followed by the solo violin playing a series of cadenzas over the orchestra which could represent the lark flying over the countryside and rolling hills. The shorter cadenza for the soloist is fairly contrasting in comparison to the rest of the piece. There are two separate melodies competing with one another yet also mimicking each other. There is…
Miguel Primentel, a R&B and soul artist, was a breath of fresh air to the R&B game in the 2010-2013 time frame. The Ballad “Candles in the Sun” was a simple, yet powerful song with a very nice message. This song was released on his second studio album Kaleidoscope Dream on September 25, 2012. Candles in the sun didn’t chart because wasn’t a single, but the album was number three on the Billboard 200 (Wikipedia 2016). “I wanted to create a song and visual that addressed my everyday concerns of life” (Miguel 2013) The song was very repetitive but had an amazing message. The song was to make you think and call to attention to the problems of the world. During 2011 and 2012 there were conflicts in the middle east, many countries had political…
“Talking shit about a pretty sunset,” is a song that portrays an overall apathetic outlook on life. The listener can clearly hear the discontent expressed in the words sung and the execution in the music. Thoughts of suicide, phobia of commitment, lack and gain of motivation, fixation and illusions of a better life are all present. Through the complex breaks and climax of the song, tells an emotional story of revelation, realization and self-actualization.…
The first song that Joseph Parisi, conductor, started with was “The Duke of Marlborough Fanfare” by Percy Grainger starts off very slow and deep with the melody being played by the woodwinds. The melody also sounds very prideful as if it is part of an end of a war and they feel proud of what they accomplished. This piece was well played and I enjoyed listening to it.…
The song that I chose to analyze is “Changes” by Tupac Shakur. The late Tupac Shakur was an African American rapper who was shot dead years ago. His powerful lyrics have impacted the rap industry to this day, because he spoke the truth. His lyrics directly related to his everyday struggles, and how being a successful African American is not an easy task to achieve. Rap usually talks about events of everyday life, and the song “Changes” talks about racial profiling, poverty, and how racism affects the everyday life of African American people. Note that this song came out in about 1996 where things were different, however the lyrics of this song still ring in the ears of people who are affected by the evil of racism.…
In The Song of Songs, the Shulamite and her lover are everything but what society conforms to. In their Hebrew society there are rules and restrictions pertaining to sexual relations and who is allowed to marry who. These rules are stated in the book of Deuteronomy, and if the citizens do not abide by the laws written in the book, the punishments were harsh and brutal. However, the Shulamite and her lover seemed to be living in their own world where they could not care less about what society thought of them. In this poem, The Shulamite and her lover break many laws, and in most cases, desire seems to be considered a higher law to them than anything written in Deuteronomy.…
Lieder ohne Worte (Song without Words) is written by the Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. It is a collection of forty-eight short lyrical piano pieces of markedly song-like character that he wrote at various periods of his life between 1809 and 1847. They are well suited to the study of musical form because of their artistic value. Op. 19b, No. 1 Andante con moto in E major was written in 1830 and is the first in the collection. The piece is in the key of E major and modulates from E to B to G major.…
