In the beginning of the book is Hazel a lonely and depressed girl who still lives to keep her parents happy, besides that she didn’t find a reason to live. She only found joy in her favourite show ‘Americas Next Top Model’ and her favourite book ‘An Imperial Affliction’. At the ending she becomes happy and also for the smallest and simplest things in life.
“Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful.” She stars living like a true teenager, she’s joking, travelling and she falls in love. Hazel begins to find her true self and therefore is the loss of innocence portrayed.
The loss of innocence also becomes clear when Gus (the love of Hazel her life) dies from cancer. The hazel in the beginning of the book wouldn’t have been able to deal with a terrible death like this, but Hazel had learned to appreciate life so she is able to have the strength to move on. So in the beginning of the book Hazel didn’t take her cancer very seriously, but after Gus his death, reality happened.
My group and I came up with the theme’s ‘love’ and ‘friendship'. Friendship is very important in this book. Hazel and Gus are not only a couple, but also best friends. They also have a special and good friendship with Isaac. So because of that Hazel and Gus are in a relationship in this book, is love also an important theme. The love in this book is not only between Hazel and Gus ,but also between them and their parents. Hazel her mother and father loves Hazel very much so they are very protective because they don’t want that anything bad happen to Hazel.
To sum up is loss of innocence a typical coming of age theme which you can recognise in The Fault in Our Stars because of how different Hazel would react to things in the beginning of the book than at the end of the book.
