Hosea Feed The Hungry - Commemorative Speech

Today I stand before you for the sole purpose of bestowing accolades, recognition and honor to a great organization which helps the homeless and needy throughout the Greater Atlanta area and beyond. This extraordinary organization is the longest running, non-profit organization in Atlanta, whose services encompasses 37 counties throughout metro Atlanta, rural Georgia, and Alabama. Ladies and gentlemen, this beloved organization is none other than Atlanta 's very own, Hosea Feed the Hungry. Before I continue, I want to take a moment to posthumously honor the founder of this organization. He was an influential Civil Rights activist, a Purple Heart U.S. Army veteran, ordained minister, businessman, philanthropist, scientist, politician and a zealous humanitarian; his name is Mr. Hosea L. Williams. Hosea was indeed a remarkable man, he created this organization in 1971 to help everyone regardless of race, even though he 'd been beaten half to death for drinking from a whites only fountain upon returning home to Georgia from serving in World War II. Although this act of hate left him disabled and walking with a cane, we can all be grateful that it did not cripple his resolve to fight for human rights and personal dignity. Hosea Williams ' selfless, tenacious spirit, lives on today through his organization, thanks to the leadership of his daughter and son-in-law, Elisabeth and Afemo Omilami. Hosea Feed the Hungry is most known for their annual outreach called Festivals of Service, provided on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It gives me great pride to inform you, that during these events, holiday dinners are served and individuals are supplied medical assistance, legal aid, clothing, toiletry items, hot showers, and barber and beautician services.
Great recognition is due, because not only does

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

My children and I volunteered to help set up the facility for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. The day before Thanksgiving we drove to downtown Atlanta to the Georgia World Congress and Convention Center. We were amazed by the number of volunteers already there. There were people from all walks of life, executives, athletes, clergy, housewives and fathers, and even some people who were clearly in need themselves.…

Increasing the awareness of the food insecurities that create the need for food pantries will, in turn, lessen the stigma surrounding them. Knowing that the need for assistance with food securities is a common problem shared by a large part of our population will help them to not feel alone in their struggle and increase the likely hood that they will seek the help of the food pantries. Volunteering at a food pantry makes it possible to personally help relieve the stigma, making those in need feel comfortable knowing that people care and there is help available. Reducing the unneeded shame associated with the need for food will help more people be willing to utilize the food banks to meet their dietary…

An authority on the subject of food politics, Critser has been interviewed by PBS and other media, and his writing on obesity earned him a James Beard nomination for best feature writing in 1999. In 1982, Ferdinand Mahfood founded the Food for the Poor to aid the poor, members of many Christian denominations, provide the core of the organization, preaching and personally distributing necessary items in the poor countries, while going abroad to seek more donations. Since 1982, Food for the Poor has distributed more than $8.2 billion worth of food, medicine, housing materials, water and other aid to the poor of the Caribbean and Latin American countries. The organization is active in 9 countries one of which is Jamaica. Food for the poor’s operation in Jamaica began in 1982.It was later incorporated in the US by Ferdinand Mahfood on June 14, 1983.At that time, Food For The Poor (FFP) Jamaica occupied a small corner of Wisynco's warehouse at White Marl in St. Catherine. There were approximately eight persons on staff who worked two or three days per week. The primary item distributed then was rice in 20-pound packages. Due to limited space at the facility, these were stored in shipping containers. As the imports grew, the warehouse was relocated to bigger facilities at Third Street in Newport West. Not long after, Hurricane Gilbert struck the island on September 12, 1988 and the building was vandalized and looted. Due to this operations were moved to Laws Street Trade Training Centre at an auditorium offered by Sister Mary Benedict Chung, who later served as the chairman and is currently a member of the organisation's Board of Directors. After a year's at Laws Street, FFP's operations were relocated to a new warehouse that was built at Wisynco. Due to this, lands were acquired in Ellerslie, Spanish Town and there a warehouse was built. In 1995, the White Marl operations were moved to this location. In 2000, a second…
