Community citizens should be able to make efforts that attribute to the common good. They are not trying to make themselves necessarily better than other communities, but they should be able to work to make their community livable and something that they will be able to appreciate and take pride in being a member of. “There are many ways to make that contribution. We do so through our jobs, volunteering, paying taxes, contributing to charities, becoming politically active. (Evans 27)” The common good in many instances is simply upheld by living our lives well. Something as simple as going to work and doing your job well to the best of your abilities is an example of how one can uphold the common good. It sounds simple enough, but the common good calls further to dive in a little deeper. Taking an active role in public life is something that is strongly encouraged in Catholic Social Teaching. When we are play that more active role in public life we are giving an example of Catholic Social Teaching. One of the best ways we contribute to public life is participating and having knowledge of the political spectrum. The role of politics plays a huge role in the common good because the political leaders of the society enact laws and these laws, in order to contribute to the common good, should be fair and just. Another way we are able to contribute to the common good in public life is if we are in a position to vote for our leaders we should take advantage of that opportunity. When voting we have the ability to help elect political leaders that can help uphold the common good. As a matter of fact, the common good must be at the forefront of our decision making when it comes to picking a political candidate to vote for. Even if one is so driven to run for a political position they can do so, so as uphold the common good for all. The public life is a very important way to uphold the common good, but we all learn what the common good is from group before anyone else and that where we find the beginning of the common good which starts with the
