Communication Timeline
Timeline Project- History of Communication
Drawings:
Cave paintings are paintings found on cave walls and ceilings, and especially refer to those of prehistoric origin. The earliest such art in Europe dates back to the Aurignacian period, approximately 40,000 years ago. Evidence suggests that they were not merely decorations; they speak of stories and things that may have happened in their life. Also surprisingly nearly 340 caves have now been discovered in France and Spain that contain art from prehistoric times.
Written Language:
Writing enables the spread of ideas over vast distances of time and space and is a prerequisite of complex civilization. Where, and by whom writing was first developed remains unknown, but scholars place the beginning of writing at 6,000 BC. Writing numbers for the purpose of record keeping began long before the writing of language. The history of writing is primarily the development of expressing language by letters or other marks.
Smoke:
In Ancient China, soldiers stationed along the Great Wall would alert each other of impending enemy attack by signaling from tower to tower. In this way, they were able to transmit a message as far away as 750 kilometers in just a few hours. The North American Indians also communicated using smoke signals. Each tribe had its own signaling system and understanding.
Postal Service:
The practice of communication by written documents carried by one person or place to another almost dates back nearly to the invention of writing. The first credible claim for the development of a real postal system comes from Ancient Persia. Mail may not have been the primary mission of this postal service, however. Messages later on found easier ways to send messages like trains, vehicles, internet, etc.
Pigeons:
A carrier pigeon or messenger pigeon is a homing pigeon that is used to carry messages. Most homing or racing type birds are used to carry messages. There is no specific breed actually called "carrier

On the other hand, communication via such media was incredibly difficult. Think, for example, of the distributional problems the Postal Service would have today if the medium of correspondence were 100lb rocks. They have enough troubles with 1/2-oz letters. A medium of communication that was lightweight and portable was needed. The first successful medium was papyrus (sheets made from the papyrus plant and glued together to form a roll sometimes 20 to 40 ft long, fastened to a wooden roller), which came into use about 2000 B.C. In 190 B.C., parchment (made from animal skins) came into use. The Greeks assembled large libraries in Ephesus and Pergamum (in what is now Turkey) and in Alexandria. According to Plutarch, the library in Pergamum contained 2,00,000 volumes in 40 B.C. (Tuchman, 1980). In 105 A.D. the Chinese invented paper, the modern medium of communication. However, because there was no effective way of duplicating communication, scholarly knowledge could not be widely disseminated. Perhaps the greatest single invention in the intellectual history of the human race was the printing press. Although movable type was invented in China in about 1100 A.D. (Tuchman, 1980), the Western World gives credit to Gutenberg, who printed his 42-line Bible from movable type on a printing press in 1455 A.D. Gutenberg’s invention was…

“Chapter 12 describes how writing emerged. The idea of writing appeared in Southwest Asia first and started to spread. As people were discovering writing, many just copied the writings and used blueprints. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all contributed to the language. In recent discussions of love and hate, a controversial issue has been presented: can true love conquer all adversity? On one hand, some argue that love has its limitation. From this perspective, many will claim that familial love cannot conquer a violent home with a violent father. On the other hand, however, others argue that love can conquer any obstacle that appears in a relationship, whether material or natural. In the words of one of this view’s main proponents, “Come live with me and be my love, and we will all the pleasures prove that valleys, groves, hills, and fields, woods, or steepy mountain yields (Marlowe 777).” According to this view, love is enough to move mountains. In sum, this issue is whether love can conquer all adversity or if love has its limitations that cannot be overcome.…
